Another improvement is the use of a drop of Locktite on the threads of the screw. Before I used the locktite, I found the flower difficult to adjust because depending on which way you turned the flower you loosened the screw. Unless asked not to, I now assemble the flower. This means you simply turn the flower to adjust it and the screw stays tight. But I'm sure that if you live in the southern hemisphere there is an area of the sky that you would be familiar with that corresponds to our north star.

Sundials can be slow or fast by about 15 minutes due to natural causes. The correction is called the Equation of Time. And has many forms: the funny figure-eight on a globe (called an analemma), a table in an almanac and the curve shown below. This is the curve engraved on the front of the Sunflower. Suppose you are reading a sundial on April 1st with the edge of the shadow at 10AM. You would add about 5 minutes making the time 10:05. On November 1, subtract about 15 minutes (9:45AM).

Depending on the season the shadow of the axis is either on the top of the disk (spring, summer) or on the bottom (fall, winter). For this reason, the disk usually has hour lines on both sides. Typically the hour lines do not start at the center of the disk but are tangent to the axis. This tells the reader which edge of the shadow is read.

Why the Sunflower can be used all year. When the sunflower is set, the face of the flower is parallel to the equator. This means that when the sun is below the equator (from the first day of fall until the first day of spring) the shadow will be on the bottom. Of the disk. That is why there is another smaller sundial on the back side of the flower.
