Charity Commission - Trust entry. Land of a Thousand Hills. Rwanda is a small but heavily populated country in east-central Africa. It is about the size of Wales and has a population of about 11.5 Million people. Located around two degrees south of the equator it is on the wartershed of Africa and has a comfortable climate because of its altitude. View map on a larger scale. Rivers to the west of the divide travel south to Lake Tanganyika then to the Congo River and the Atlantic Ocean.

Charity Commission - Trust entry. A brief history of Rwanda. Colonial period and freedom. Genocide - 100 days in 1994. The Rwandan Patriotic Front was an army formed by exiled Tutsis in Uganda. They were led by Paul Kagame, who is now Rwanda's president. They came south from Uganda and stopped the killing. Interahamwe militias, driven from Rwanda, took refuge in Congo. In the north of Rwanda they would make regular incursions into Rwanda and it was quite dangerous around Shyira until late 1999.
