My portraits rarely have a background as I like to focus on the person, the character. A background seems incidental, to distract from the subject. I find it interesting achieving physical likeness at one with the sitter's character. As an illustrator I drew and painted predominately people. Siân's normal methodology when commissioned for portraits is to spend some time with the subject, listening to their needs and how they see themselves then she photographs the subject, often at her studio in Hoxton, but this can also be done at the subject's home, which is often easier for children's portraits.
