Spanning 528,147 acres, the reserve is 98% state owned and 2% privately owned, with around 1800 inhabitants. Archeologists have uncovered 23 Mayan sites in Sian Ka’an, including the ruins of Chenchomac, Chunyaxché, and El Plantal, where they discovered ancient mummies, ceramics, and other relics dating back over 2300 years.
