Words of a Feather. Wednesday, May 09, 2007. Testicle and Testimony in the Mary Winkler Case. For some reason, I got hooked on the Mary Winkler case. She's the woman who killed her minister husband by shooting him in the back while he was sleeping. Perhaps it was the religious angle or the fact that I never figured out how Mary could afford an expensive defense. Posted by Murray Suid at 12:27 PM. View my complete profile. Words of a Feather. Thursday, January 04, 2007. Essay Writing Contest on "Words of a Feather". Interest is building in WORDS OF A FEATHER. The first printing sold out! This means that there might be a Volume 2. Stranger things have happened (although I can't think of any right now). Nothing would please me more than to have the second volume be a collaborative effort. I did another book using that process- THE KIDS' HOW TO DO (ALMOST) EVERYTHING GUIDE. Topics ranged from avoiding shark attacks to...If yo...

Words of a Feather. Friday, April 27, 2007. Congressional democrats have proposed a deadline for beginning the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. President Bush and his supporters call this a policy of surrender. Surrender" sounds bad, especially to those who think that "winning is the only thing." But an etymological look at the word suggests that a "surrender" isn' the same thing as defeatism or cowardice. Posted by Murray Suid at 2:20 PM. Thursday, April 26, 2007. Words of a Feather. Sunday, March 11, 2007. In an amusing New York Times essay on the pitfalls of word-banning ( A War of Words, 3/11/07) Peter Applebome rechristens vagina as the v-word. I like vagina as much as the next person, and I never stop marveling over the fact that etymologically vagina is a kissing cousin of vanilla, one of my favorite flavors. But the honor of the v-word euphemism actually belongs to virgin. If you ask, "Aren’t there any words that should be tabooed? View my complete profile.

Words of a Feather. Thursday, February 15, 2007. If you think that our president just sits around all day in the Oval Office solving problems or maybe NOT solving problems you may be onto something, at least etymologically speaking. The president's pr people might want us to view our chief executive as someone carrying out bold actions leading, commanding, managing, organizing, budgeting, inspiring, presiding. Given that the etymology of "president" teaches us that the president is "someone who sits," we...

Words of a Feather. Monday, May 21, 2007. The New York Times today published an editorial titled "Matthew's Vindication." The piece focused on the Matthew LaClair, a high school student who challenged a teacher's right to proclaim- in class that evolution is a false theory and that only Christians will be admitted to heaven. At first, the school board backed the teacher and criticized the youth as did many of Matthew's classmates. The problem is: Matthew wasn't being hateful in rejecting religious instru...

Words of a Feather. Friday, March 09, 2007. Shrouding Scrotum in a Cloud of Shame. A few weeks ago, a number of librarians across the country caused a stir by banning a children’s novel that included the word "scrotum." What exactly is so bad about scrotum, an ancient word that shares linguistic roots with "shroud"? Was it because "scrotum" is slang? One librarian had the balls to blame the novel’s author for not having the young readers in mind. Huh? Explaining words is a key job in teaching. I suppose ...

Words of a Feather. Wednesday, December 06, 2006. You Can't Use a Spelling Trick to Fool God. This blog being about words, we need to define our subject. You may think, But everyone knows what a word is. Not so. When I was a freshman in a Western Civilization lecture, my eyes happened to wander to the notebook of young coed as she penned a note that included the word G-d. When the bell rang I asked, Why did you spell God that way? She answered, The Bible forbids us to write the name of the Lord. A word i...

Words of a Feather. Wednesday, April 18, 2007. Mr Cho, the student blamed for mudering 32 students at Virginia Tech, apparently used a Glock 9 mm pistol to commit the crime. Although Glock is known for manufacturing efficient weapons- including weapons of mass destruction- a visit to their website (Glock.com) suggests that they are also masters of Orwellian language. Their logo reads: "Glock Perfection." Perhaps they feel that their 9 mm pistol is perfect for assassinating large numbers of innocents.
