There is a concern when Beacon Avenue is two way, there will be increased traffic congestion. This is true and important to making downtown Sidney more accessible. Sidney Tourism Improvement Group. History of the Change. Articles & Info. The main reason for changes to Beacon Avenue in 1997 was to improve the looks, or streetscape, of Beacon Avenue. This was accomplished by putting the hydro lines underground, widening the sidewalks, adding street furniture and trees. The one-way traffic was a late addition. The streetscape of Beacon Avenue is indeed beautiful and will only continue to improve with lighting, new street furniture and other new attractive features.

Merchants did not want to pay to beautify Beacon Avenue. Mayor found a way to improve Beacon Avenue while keeping two way traffic. Merchants wanted one way so delivery trucks could stay on Beacon Avenue. One way was the flavour of the day. Ne way streets, at the time, were the flavour of the day. Oday most towns have reverted back to a two way system.
