silence is the ornament

Silence is the ornament. Thursday, January 26, 2012. Lying on the soft duff. A sprinkle of snow on the moss. Salal cushions the twigs. Splayed towards the sky. Watching trunks tower in parallel lines. Narrowing to a meeting point. Just beyond my view infinity. Crowns spray like black fireworks. Thrown against the winter lemon sky. Wandering those paths in August. Leaning underneath the lacy branches. Tart red berries tiny to the hands. Are collected in the pail. And musky salal berries. Fungus in the air.

silence is the ornament: April 2007

http://www.silenceistheornament.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html

Silence is the ornament. Saturday, April 07, 2007. I came to the bridge. You probably know it. Where the stream runs underneath. And tumbles down the rocks. I stood and looked down. At the manicured gardens. That used to be a quarry. But the bright colours. And the light voices. And the heavy scent. So I descended by the back way. And found the light green blooms. Of hellebore in the shade. Posted by Suzanne McCarthy at 8:31 PM. Unknitting - For Susan. Before I came to write. Email to a friend.

http://www.silenceistheornament.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html

Silence is the ornament. Saturday, March 10, 2007. Unknitting - For Susan. She had chosen the pattern with elaborate care. Not the symmetric diamonds of the fairisle. But narrow nordic peaks. That reflected the high ridged mountains. Where they lived together. She had chosen the pattern with such care. Because she was using the best yarn. Long fibred yarn with a tight twist. Firm rigid multi-ply strands. Nubbly as it ran through her fingers. It is a good thing too. Because you cannot unravel any old wool.

silence is the ornament: Somebody's Son

http://www.silenceistheornament.blogspot.com/2006/09/somebodys-son.html

Silence is the ornament. Monday, September 11, 2006. We kissed our son goodbye. We embraced and prayed. For God's care and blessing. As he set off for the Arctic. Back from the oilfields,. And off again - to experience life. The sun was brilliant and the air cold. Daffodils and periwinkle trimmed the path. So we walked down to the beach. Where lycra clad runners celebrate health. And fathers bring pails and shovels. Following their sons barefoot. Lasers raced across the surf. In the way of parasailers.

silence is the ornament: Happiness

http://www.silenceistheornament.blogspot.com/2006/06/happiness.html

Silence is the ornament. Tuesday, June 27, 2006. Like drinking water from a creek. In your cupped hands. Lap it up before it leaks. Out between your fingers. Splash it in your face. That run off the end of your nose. On the tip of your tongue. And hands must be dipped again. To wet a dry throat. And wipe the sweat away. Then one day you come. Sliding down the gravel bank. Sitting on your rock. And the creek is dry. Sand on the parched bed. Dappled with the pools. Of summer's last flow. It will fill again.

Pieced Together Praise: Who goes here?

http://piecedtogetherpraise.blogspot.com/2009/02/who-goes-here.html

Sunday, 15 February 2009. I'm vaguely wondering about having a site counter on the blog, to see how many hits the site gets. But I rather suspect it's out of vanity/idle curiosity. Why do I need to know? Oops, only 24 facts to go now.) I prefer to be silent and mysterious, at least when I'm talking to numbers of people beyond my control. And maybe I should extend the same privilege to whoever comes across this. Any views, gentle readers? 15 February 2009 at 12:20. Enemies too I suppose! Why do we need to?

Pieced Together Praise: June 2010

http://piecedtogetherpraise.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 22 June 2010. I don't have the traditional result of nine months' waiting since my last post to report. in fact, I'm not sure I've got anything to report at all, beyond Advent and Christmas, Lent and Easter, Pentecost and umpteen Sundays after Trinity. I should love to see measurable transformation, but that doesn't seem to be how it works. Or am I just looking in the wrong direction? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Do Something About It. Saturday, 14 February 2009. Praise in the Park III. 14 February 2009 at 10:09. There must be a way to post more than one pic at once from Picasa but as I should really be writing my sermon I'll leave it for now. 21 February 2009 at 06:48. Picasa, tu casa, or something. Technicalities aside, I think your Praise in the Park is fabulous. I guess I was trying to capture the same kind of thing with this. Http:/ www.flickr.com/photos/35345383@N05/3295065508/. Pieced Together Praise: February 2009

http://piecedtogetherpraise.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, 28 February 2009. Last night one of those surreal moments happened that make life worthwhile. I was sitting at the back of a darkened theatre full of arm-waving kids, with a Sunday School teacher on both sides of me, la-laing into each ear an Elton John classic, 'Crocodile Rock' - or, as it had been rebaptised, 'Sunday School Rock' - being 'played' by a bunch of Muppet-like puppets on stage. To its target audience, the show went down big. But I was left confused. Monday, 16 February 2009. By Ma...

Pieced Together Praise: January 2009

http://piecedtogetherpraise.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, 25 January 2009. Yesterday I saw a fantastic exhibition of sculptures. As the publicity for this event had promised, the stages of Jean's grieving also resonate with people who have not experienced breast cancer but know other forms of bereavement and loss. I could imagine the DVD in itself being a very powerful focus for a group discussion or for worship - the whole set-up had been used that way for the local Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Service the week before. Friday, 23 January 2009.

Pieced Together Praise: Detective evangelism

http://piecedtogetherpraise.blogspot.com/2009/02/detective-evangelism.html

Monday, 16 February 2009. On the bus coming home just now I met an acquaintance who commented on the book I was reading ( Hen's Teeth. In the same way as I urged him to read Margery Allingham. Above all, why can't I be as evangelistic about Jesus as I am about Dorothy L. Sayers. Who herself was no mean evangelist, though sadly that meant she stopped writing about Lord Peter Wimsey)? I wish I knew. 16 February 2009 at 14:20. Meanwhile have you read Arnold Bennestt's Grand Hotel Babylon? I had a similar di...

YorkU Sexual Assault Policy. YorkU Sexual Assault Policy. Silence is Violence aims to radically alter the culture of institutional violence on university campuses across Canada. The group is experientially led, meaning that all initiatives and recommendations from the group come from those who have lived with sexual and gendered violence. This approach is more than merely ‘survivor-centric’ as those who have experienced sexual violence are placed in decision-making and leadership roles. We take an anti-c...
