Is a short film, of about five minutes in length, starring Tiffany Haynes and directed by Nick Loven. In August I was approached by a BBC antiques programme, being filmed locally, to supply actresses in Victorian costumes (pictured below) to play a game of croquet on the lawn of the house where they were filming. In the end the shoot didn’t go ahead, but the idea had whetted our appetites! However, there was no budget. As this was an unfunded project, fitting in a day for filming when cast, crew and loca...

In the late 1980’s I worked as a volunteer collating the costume collection of the Hollytrees Museum in Colchester. I drew each of the costumes in detail for their information cards (this was in the days before digital cameras and digital data gathering)! So I thought I would occasionally share one of these drawings with you. Sadly, I didn’t make a note of the accession numbers of the gowns, but here is the first:. No 1: A Titanic Era Gown: 1908-12. The Lady of Shalott Costumes. Making The Lady of Shalott’s gowns for the Lady of Shalott film. The Lady of Shalott themed paintings by John William Waterhouse provided the visual inspiration for the clothes worn by The Lady of Shalott in our dramatisation. In 1888 he painted his first version:. If possible, I also wanted our actress to resemble the model Waterhouse used and we had the great good fortune of finding Victoria Rigby, an actress who bears a remarkable resemblance, to play The Lady. The gown w...

A few of my hand-made replica 18th century silk gowns, petticoats and stays photographed in and around the beautiful Assembly Rooms in Lincoln. In addition to the obvious attention to the historic period, costume design can be a much influenced by the character and appearance of an actress as the role she is to play. This short museum film on the layers of 18th century dress was commissioned by The Lady Lever Art Gallery and made by Crow’s Eye Productions, directed and filmed by Nick Loven. During the Fi...

The most iconic of all American paintings, American Gothic, was the inspiration for another of our short painting/technology inspired video sketches. American Gothic was painted by Iowan artist Grant Wood in 1930. The painting was inspired by an actual house in Eldon, Iowa which was white painted and built in the ‘Carpenter Gothic’ style of architecture. Interestingly, this beautiful house still stands and is open to the public click here for The American Gothic House Centre web site. The gentleman’s gla...
