So where is SOPA now? SOPA is considered “dead”, having been postponed since January 21st. However, a new and adapted bill, the CISPA, has been proposed and is considered just as much a threat as the original SOPA bill.

The future

What will happen next? It is a basic agreement that internet piracy is not a positive thing. However, the ideas presented with SOPA will need much further amending before being acceptably passed to law. My prediction is that sooner rather than later, a more detailed bill targeting specific issues will be passed in regards to online piracy.

The negative side of SOPA. SOPA being passed and converted into law would mean an extreme extension of governmental control and power over the people. Ultimately, it puts the major social networking sites responsible for every user’s actions. Spam on Facebook or Twitter could get the entire network shut down. The site must be shut down before site owners have the chance to defend themselves, which is seen as being in direct contradiction of the First Amendment. Targets the wrong people].

The positive side of SOPA. SOPA was created with all of the right intentions. Every day, numerous people are not receiving the credit or profits they have rightfully earned through their creations. Passing SOPA will show internet pirates that the government is taking notice and taking action. This could very well discourage further illegal activity.
