Die Universität Freiburg besitzt im Rahmen einer Stiftung den 127 ha großen Mathislewald. Gemäß dem Stiftungszweck wird der Wald neben seiner Einkommensfunktion auch für Lehr- und Forschungszwecke durch die Forstwissenschaftliche Fakultät genutzt. Die Bewirtschaftung des Mathislewaldes wird in Zusammenarbeit mit der Stiftungsverwaltung der Universität und dem Staatlichen Forstamt Titisee-Neustadt durch das Waldbau-Institut geleitet.
