Blog about wine, beer and food by Leeds copywriter
simon says:: February 2014
http://simonohare.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
What is problem drinking and how do we tackle it? Alcohol misuse has been in the news again this week after the latest set of official figures were released - I did a news story on it here. And a lot of the main news outlets covered it, including an opinion piece by Owen Jones in the Independent headlined The drug we ignore that kills thousands. This is such a complex area - beer writer Pete Brown makes the case against the stats and a general clampdown on booze here. Do higher prices work? As long as yo...

A brewery-turned-gallery: The Tetley in Leeds. The Tetley, Leeds. Called into The Tetley. The location of The Tetley feels like a historic little patch of Leeds, with the Salem Chapel nearby and a blue plaque. Marking the formation of Leeds United; the great Adelphi. Pub is also a stone's throw away. Also not forgetting this is primarily a drink and food blog, the cafe (set up with consultation from Anthony Flinn's company) looked and smelled good too. Our kids really enjoyed the Springboard Saturdays.

A really unusual red wine: Fonte del Re Lacrima di Morro d'Alba. Are you stuck in a wine drinking rut? Sick of drinking stuff that tastes just a bit, well, winey? Here's a weird one to get you thinking while you're drinking. I suspect it might divide people into the "wow, that's really interesting" camp and the "wow, that's really weird. Camp, so choose the right time to open it. Did I enjoy it? In mind, it was drinkable too. Fonte del Re Lacrima di Morro d'Alba. 163;11.99 from M&S. Posted by Simon O'Hare.
simon says:: Why does wine on TV make geeks angry?
http://simonohare.blogspot.com/2013/12/why-does-wine-on-tv-make-geeks-angry.html
Why does wine on TV make geeks angry? The BBC showed a programme last night called The 12 Drinks of Christmas. Presented by brothers-in-law Giles Coren and Alexander Armstrong. I thought it was quite good. This is a rare thing, a TV programme about alcohol. Surprisingly so, given how much time and money Brits devote to booze. But one thing's for certain: every single time wine or beer is in the mainstream media, a backlash from experts and enthusiasts will follow. About something to be serious about some...
simon says:: Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz 2011 - a brilliant wine
http://simonohare.blogspot.com/2014/01/clonakilla-shiraz-2011-brilliant-wine.html
Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz 2011 - a brilliant wine. We drank this in the last hour or two of the final day of 2013 - and it might just've been my favourite wine of the whole year. It smelt and tasted floral and natural, somehow, reminding me a bit of the really good Spanish wines. I've drunk. It made us think of weddings: fragrant wafts of perfume; bright flowers; deep, fruity cake. I bought it many months ago at Harvey Nichols, but it looks a great buy at Slurp. Posted by Simon O'Hare. Drop me a line.

WheatSurrender: January 2011
http://www.wheatsurrender.co.uk/2011_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, 29 January 2011. Leeds Coeliac Food Fayre in Pictures. On 29th Jan I headed over to St Chad's Parish Centre in Headingley for the annual Leeds Coeliac Food Fayre. There was a huge turnout of locals who were queuing out of the door when I arrived. Most of whom were pensioners. I was quite surprised by this as I expected there to be a wide range of people at the fayre. It felt a bit like I'd crashed a coffee morning! Big names in the gluten free world such as Dietary Specials. Brands. They ga...
WheatSurrender: The Joy of Mex
http://www.wheatsurrender.co.uk/2011/02/joy-of-mex.html
Thursday, 3 February 2011. The Joy of Mex. I had a lovely surprise one afternoon when a little parcel arrived from Chapel Allerton favourite Salsa Mexicana. The mystery parcels made it home and I steamed them for 15 minutes as instructed. I popped them over a pan of boiling rice as I assumed this to be the best accompaniment for them. I later learned that the slightly spicy, cheesy and wonderfully stodgy parcels were in fact vegetarian Wensleydale Cheese Tamales with P oblano chillies. The most important...
WheatSurrender: Card-Carrying Wheat Dodger?
http://www.wheatsurrender.co.uk/2011/02/card-carrying-wheat-dodger.html
Saturday, 26 February 2011. This post is a bit delayed partly due to life getting in the way and partly from me reeling from shock. I received my results to the York Test I blogged about in January. Very quickly after posting my blood sample off to their lab. I think it took about a week or so. And 'how come it's just come on and it wasn't a problem before? Having some kind of confirmation that you're not mad or attention seeking is quite a comfort. So I was really keen to get my results. I don't know ab...
WheatSurrender: Worth the Dough
http://www.wheatsurrender.co.uk/2010/05/worth-dough.html
Sunday, 16 May 2010. Hands up who misses pizza? Hands up who would break most of their morals just to get their hands on a piping hot stringy slice of Sloppy Giuseppe? Pizza is back and it's guilt-free AND dirt cheap! My favourite restaurant of the moment is Salvo's. Salvo's family owners Gip and John have teamed up with Isabel's Brazilian Flavours. The good news is that the mix is due to go on sale in Waitrose supermarkets so will be widely available. I had a go at making a couple of pizzas to indulge m...

http://www.wheatsurrender.co.uk/2011/01/wheat-dodger-winter-warmer-sweet-potato.html
Monday, 3 January 2011. Wheat Dodger Winter Warmer: Sweet Potato and Chilli Soup. To top it off, you've got to go back to work tomorrow! Well, we won't be having any grumpiness on this here blog, so here's a lovely cheap, warming, filling, healthy and easy meal to help you feel more energetic, cheerful and will hopefully make your jeans a bit less snug. I'm not into fancy cooking, I just like easy, cheap and tasty stuff. So here is my Cheap 'n' Cheerful Sweet Potato and Chilli Soup. 750g sweet potatoes (...
WheatSurrender: You Cheddar Believe It: One for the Mini Wheat Dodgers
http://www.wheatsurrender.co.uk/2011/02/you-cheddar-believe-it-one-for-mini.html
Monday, 7 February 2011. You Cheddar Believe It: One for the Mini Wheat Dodgers. I first stumbled upon Isabel's Brazilian Flavours. Products at Salvo's in Headingley. As they teamed up with Isabel to create a fantastic pizza base mix. Which is used in their award-winning restaurant. The pizza base mix is one of my favourite gluten free products and even my wheat-scoffing other half loves it. It's different because it's made with Brazilian cassava flour which makes it nice and crispy. Leeds, United Kingdom.
WheatSurrender: Mmm, Bettys!
http://www.wheatsurrender.co.uk/2011/01/mmm-bettys.html
Saturday, 15 January 2011. As a birthday present I took my sister to Betty's Tearoom in Ilkley. Wanted to go for afternoon tea, so how could I decline? My sister lives in Manchester so doesn't see me everyday and knows little of my eating habits. She didn't realise that I would have to sit and watch her eating it. I felt awful. I had to keep the rouse going until she ordered. I didn't want her worrying about me, it was her day. Then she asked the dreaded question "So what are you having? The waitress kin...
WheatSurrender: Blood Simple: Taking the York Test
http://www.wheatsurrender.co.uk/2011/01/blood-simple-taking-york-test.html
Monday, 10 January 2011. Blood Simple: Taking the York Test. I've been putting this off as it scared me a little. If it wasn't for you wheat dodgers, it would still be in the box gathering dust. I've been sent a YorkTest FoodScan kit. Which is the first stage of testing for 113 specific food intolerances. There are two reasons why I didn't want to take the test initially. What if I'm intolerant to other foods? Do I really want to know that? Well, I finally grew a pair and got on with it. It took all of 5...
WheatSurrender: No such thing as a (Gluten) Free Lunch?
http://www.wheatsurrender.co.uk/2010/04/no-such-thing-as-gluten-free-lunch.html
Wednesday, 28 April 2010. No such thing as a (Gluten) Free Lunch? NOTE TO READERS: 27TH FEBRUARY 2011. Two things. 1 - Juice Junkie has sadly closed down. And 2 - cous cous is in fact made entirely of wheat in many places, although proper cous cous is made of millet. My mistake. I wrote this ages ago and this whole wheat dodging is quite a learning curve! Anyway, I wandered round to see how long it would take me to find something decent to eat that wouldn't break the bank. Namely, a sandwich. I didn't ha...
WheatSurrender: Colonic Hydrotherapy in Harrogate Part 1 - The treatment
http://www.wheatsurrender.co.uk/2010/04/colonic-hydrotherapy-in-harrogate-part.html
Thursday, 15 April 2010. Colonic Hydrotherapy in Harrogate Part 1 - The treatment. There is so much to tell in this post so I have split it up into 2 parts. Mainly so that your eyes (and mine) don't go square from staring at the screen too long. Colon hydrotherapy (also known as Colonic irrigation) is an alternative therapy offered to help the following symptoms common in sufferers of food allergies:. Backache, sciatic pain. Acne, psoriasis and other skin complaints. She went on to explain the benefits o...

My thoughts
Live life for what its worth or don't live it at all. Thursday, July 8, 2010. Once again saved the day. I got my sparring gear from them a year ago when I first joined Karate. I guess I am just a repeat customer drawn back by the good quality, and low prices. Tuesday, June 1, 2010. 3 years free, clean, and alone? I know its rough. I have grown a lot in the past 3 years, hell, in the past year! Monday, January 11, 2010. Who i really miss right now. Ahh what a week. What an emotional week. Well, le...My na...
