Sailing the Med… and beyond. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Category Archives: Balearic Islands. October 3, 2014. Finally we were off to Cabrera, a little island to the South of Mellorca. My mum and everyone else had recommended this place. It’s a national park so you need a permit but we’d managed to secure one! Anyway that mean’t that we had a straight line straight into the bay. Awesome! All day, Simon has been harking on about ‘I bet there’s a pub, I’m going to ...Then we round t...

Sailing the Med… and beyond. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Panama, Shelter Bay Marina. March 27, 2015. Our overnight sail from San Blas to Panama’s Shelter Bay marina went without a hitch. If anything we were sailing too quickly so had to reduce the sail area to slow us down as we wanted to arrive during daylight. With such deep insight we guessed he must have been the supervisor. At the end of the inspection he smiled, said we were good to go then handed over our Transit number!

Sailing the Med… and beyond. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Category Archives: ARC Rally (Atlantic). February 4, 2015. Been meaning to post this image for a while. We’ve finally had good enough internet to upload the image (click for a high resolution version). It shows our ARC crossing over the Atlantic (highlighted track), along with everyone else’s paths. Pretty cool to see where everyone went. December 23, 2014. ARC 2014 is now finished! Its like leaving home for that first time!

Sailing the Med… and beyond. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Bay of Biscay crossing. May 16, 2014. Crossing Biscay had been in the back of our minds for a while. I’d read so much about this 340 mile ocean crossing – mostly lots of scary stories about boats getting into trouble or crews with a lot more experience than us being ‘out of their depths’ and being ‘crazy to take on such a passage’. Should they really do this? Then we spotted a weather window that could work. A nice three...

Sailing the Med… and beyond. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. April 1, 2014. Our last stop before heading out into the North Sea was to be Cuxhaven. Here we would take on more fuel before the three or four day crossing back to old Blighty. There was nothing else to do but head to the pub! So we went in. Yes it was one of those crazy nights where you laugh and laugh until your belly hurts and it will definitely be one to remember! After waiting a hour or two for someone to arrive, it wa...

Sailing the Med… and beyond. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. April 28, 2014. Ok I’ll admit it- our long stay in Guernsey was mostly due to us trying to get our heads around the fact we’d be sailing. on our own. over the channel. to France! We got out of it without any harm but still not a great boost for our confidence levels. The amazing sunrise almost made up for it. Almost. We got the sails up and didn’t have any issues getting to the south of the island and then out into open water.

Sailing the Med… and beyond. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. November 3, 2014. The crossing to Gibraltar was pretty nasty. Wind on the nose, choppy waves, and then the wind died to zero and we had to motor. Not much fun at all. It did get interesting as we approched though. Ten miles off the coast we saw a bit of mist forming over Gibraltar. As we got closer this mist turned into full on, can’t see the end of the boat, fog. Great! A new bottle of deck wash? We were recommended a compa...

Sailing the Med… and beyond. Skip to primary content. July 15, 2015. Bora Bora, more like horror horror! Well at least for our first two nights here). We had a very quick sail over from Tahaa in rising winds knowing that the weather was about to change for the worst. Our plan was to get over to the Bora Bora yacht club, which would hopefully offer us shelter, and then pick up a mooring. Bora Bora is a small little place, stunning landscapes, nice beaches, amazing restaurants, and the most high-end hotels...

Sailing the Med… and beyond. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. October 1, 2015. Getting to New Caledonia was a bit of a race. The usual trio set off together; Whale and the Bird, Pied-a-Mer and ourselves. Pied-a-Mer set off early and, after a tussle with a mooring line, got off to a good start. They also took the closest passage through the reef, giving them a better sailing angle. Damn it! More like Amazing Disgrace! We were trying to time the Havannah pass during daylight hours. W...
