This is not a portrait of the Kinks' village green or Britpop's cool Britannia. Polly Jean's England is proud but filled with regret, exhaustion and horror. Hearing such a vision come from Harvey's evocative, strained voice only cements Let England Shake. As one of the most fascinating and rewarding releases of the year.
