EtherCAT 安全技术是基于 IEC 61508 开发的，由 TÜV 认证，并以 IEC 61784-3 标准化。 该协议可支持到功能安全等级 SIL 3 的安全应用场合。 Safety over EtherCAT 中，通信系统可被看作所谓 黑色通道 的一部分，它并非安全相关的。 该 安全容器 作为过程数据通信的一部分被传输，而且数据的安全与否并不取决于基础的通信技术，也不仅限于 EtherCAT。 安全容器通过各种控制器路由并在机器的各部分中被处理，这使急停功能可以对整个机器有效，或使机器的部分目标实现安全停止 即使该部分与其他通信系统 如以太网系统 相连。 在机器人行业应用中，通过使用 SoE 以 8-kHz 闭环的形式实现安全运动控制。 另外，借助于 Safety over EtherCAT 协议，还可通过 EAP 实现安全关键数据的传输。
