Minor Tech Milestones

Jun 28, 2008 Jim. I just gained the CompTIA PDI certification for printers and document imaging. Not my favorite topic, but it helps keep me employed. I've been wanting to toy with IPv6 for a while, and I think the time is right. I want to be familiar with it as I expect companies to start going to it more and more as the government and foreign nations transition. It's still hard to get it natively from normal ISPs, but I just signed up at SixXS. Comments powered by Disqus.

Just some technical blabla. . . Laquo; GRE Tunneling and Recursive Routing. Lately, Ive been playing around with DHCPv6 and SLAAC on my home network. How Ive implemented IPv6 addressing. Im using a Cisco 1841 router as my gateway to the Internet that allows me to enable native IPv6 for my home network. Unfortunately, my ISP (Ziggo) currently does not provide native IPv6 connectivity to the Internet, so Im using the free IPv6 Tunnel Broker service of SixXS. However, I noticed that instead of one (routable...

Just some technical blabla. . . Lately, Ive been playing around with DHCPv6 and SLAAC on my home network. The second way of (auto) configuring IPv6 addresses is by using DHCPv6. This works similar as DHCPv4. DHCPv6 is also called statefull addressing as there is a central server that gives out the IPv6 addresses and it also maintains a mapping table of all the hosts and the assigned addresses. With DHCPv6 it is also possible to assign DNS servers and other options (similar to how DHCPv4 works). However, ...

Gadgets, web and miscellany. Publications and conference proceedings. Using IPv6 with a router. This is my running log of trying to enable IPv6 at home using a router that is NOT built into my modem. Hopefully this will be successful in short order, and therefore useful to the internet at large. I currently am set up with a Cisco RV042v3 DUAL WAN router. Connecting to a CenturyLink/Qwest Q1000 ActionTec VDSL2 modem/router. In “transparent bridging” mode. When the router is configured as on this site.

Technical Stuff - IPv6. IPv6 provides more than 3,4x10 38 unique addresses, so it doesn't really have the limitation of IPv4. Additionaly it supports some nifty features such as IPsec, QoS and stateless autoconfiguration. An interesting application which is also possible with IPv6 is Mobile-IPv6, which gives IP-addresses the possibility to move around and roam via various other networks, without changing the ip address - basically like a always present vpn tunnel.
