Enjoying Nozawa Onsen

March 22, 2010. Over the next few days, I had a great time. I did as much skiing as I could – making a mental note to myself to work on my legs before my next trip! Standing on skis all day is surprisingly tiring. In the spirit of honesty, I should say that I also spent a good amount of time flat on my face. Whatever – it’s all downhill, right? Snow doesn’t hurt – much. On the days I was too sore to ski, I wandered about town. There was plenty to see, too – even the buildings were very cool. Next post: E...

Time to Hit The Mountain. March 20, 2010. I woke up for my first full day in Nozawa Onsen, keen to get started. After a host breakfast, I picked dressed in my snow gear, collected my skis, and left for the mountain. I was headed for an area called Karasawa. It’s a short walk to the mountain, but includes going up a pretty steep hill. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to walk in ski boots, but it ain’t easy! But the Nagasaka gondola station where I needed to be is on the other side of town. My plan wa...

Getting to Nozawa Onsen

Getting to Nozawa Onsen. Nozawa Onsen is off the beaten track, but it’s still pretty easy to get to. When you arrive in Japan, you’ll probably come in to Narita International Airport. When I say it’s a big airport, I’m not kidding. Last time I arrived, I disembarked from the plane, then there was a short train ride to get to the actual airport and pass through customs! I opted for the more scenic route though, staying a night in Tokyo, and taking trains from there. Catching the train in Japan? The Shinka...
