The introduction of slavery in the 1600’s was critical to the growth of the American economy over the next 200 years. Slaves were an important labor source to support growth yet over time came to categorize black slaves as property without rights. The relationship between white slave owners and black slaves ultimately created racial biases and shaped views on race that are still present in America today. Create a free website. Lavery became a key component to the prosperous economy and continued to grow throughout much of colonial America. Initially, this new class of labor was categorized as “indentured servants.”. This category included poor white Englishmen who traded years of labor in exchange for getting into America and black people brought to the colonies from Africa. Lthough slaves were an important part of the new growing economy of america, it also created racial bias we still see today. 1696: Virginia passed laws that would place Native Americans and Africans into one racial category that was identified as “negroes and other slaves.”. 1696: South Carolina adopted a law from Barbados saying that slave owners need only provide slaves with clothing - no other provisions were required of owners under Common English Law.
