The Lonely Goatherd: With a View of Vulcan
http://philosophiesofafoodie.blogspot.com/2012/01/with-view-of-vulcan.html
Wednesday, January 18, 2012. With a View of Vulcan. And this is where that mature balance comes in. I woke up on Tuesday and KNEW - I just knew it - that I don't fit into this place as I've seen it thus far. The same issues reared their ugly little heads: wow, all these really cool people and this interesting movement as it happens here has nothing to do with anyone not traditionally of privilege. Where is the history in Birmingham's sustainable ag? I'm going to the SSAWG. The green will be out again soon.

Dry Seasonings: January 2012

Sunday, January 29, 2012. Chinese New Year Duck Tacos. Many westerners are not aware that Chinese New Year is not just a one day affair, but actual a two week festival. This is fortunate for me because this year’s Year of the Dragon snuck up on me and I didn’t want to miss out on making a celebratory meal. To that end, I was off to Lee Lee’s Oriental Market for inspiration. I wanted to do a fruit salsa but was not crazy about the grapefruit and Asian pear salsa that Ching used. I wanted something swe...

The Lonely Goatherd: A Good Friend
http://philosophiesofafoodie.blogspot.com/2012/03/good-friend.html
Tuesday, March 13, 2012. To me, a good friend is the kind that really makes you (me) think. When I say think I mean really, really think - more often than not, thinking that makes you realize that you're sort of an idiot - either through making you realize how good you've got it or making you realize how lazy you've gotten. I recently had a just such a conversation with just such a friend, and now I sit befuddled and clogged with thoughts and wild words. And not from experience. Is it ever scary! I worry...

The Lonely Goatherd: Food work is HARD.
http://philosophiesofafoodie.blogspot.com/2012/07/food-work-is-hard.html
Sunday, July 8, 2012. Food work is HARD. I've spent the last three weeks trying to figure out how to articulate what I want to do with my life. No big deal, right? Of course it is. I lost my job at the farm about three weeks ago "due to financial constraints" and am choosing to view this as an opportunity to work closer to my true interests. What those are (and whether an appropriate job exists) are yet to be determined. Isn't it amazing how being outside just slows time down? This is the big question!

The Lonely Goatherd: Next Steps (and Some Previous Ones Too)
http://philosophiesofafoodie.blogspot.com/2011/11/next-steps-and-some-previous-ones-too.html
Monday, November 7, 2011. Next Steps (and Some Previous Ones Too). How does grassroots food justice happen without a fancy .org or .edu to foot the bill and call the board meeting? At this point I know fully well that non-profits and academia only play a peripheral role in what I see as food justice, what I see as my albeit-undefined greater Goal. Let's be real, though: how do you find a job that way? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Do-gooder trying to be closer to the dirt under her feet.

The Lonely Goatherd: Rainy Day Musing?
http://philosophiesofafoodie.blogspot.com/2012/02/today-is-cloudy-grey-day-in-ham-yeah-i.html
Wednesday, February 1, 2012. Today is a cloudy, grey day in the 'ham (yeah I used a terrible nickname for my new home), and as such I have been relegated to taking the day off instead of plowing through the muddy, six-inch-deep clay of my employer's land. The past week has provided much food for thought, and only now have I gotten the chance to actually sit and process any of it. (But first .). Good morning, Vulcan! I take some inspiration from this Chicago honey co-op. Or the Farmer-Veteran Coalition.
