International Conventions: The Magic Lantern Society

Intro to Lantern History. The Magic Lantern Society International Convention. Every four years the Society hosts an International Convention in Great Britain. The last two Conventions, in 2009 in London and 2013 in Birmingham, saw members attending from around the world for three wonderful days of discussion, lectures, shows, an exhibition and an auction. Intro to Lantern History. No magic lantern show consisted of slides alone: there were always elements like music, audience participation or the spoken word. Especially in the later nineteenth century, many slide producers published ‘readings’ giving a recitation, story or lecture to accompany the slide images. The Society’s Readings Library. Intro to Lantern History. Auctions of lanterns, slides and other material. From time to time, the Society hosts auctions at our meetings. These are open to Society members only and give the chance to acquire hard-to-find items, often at very competitive prices. An auction, usually running to several hundred items, is held during our International Convention.

From the seventeenth century different manufacturers and countries engaged in fierce competition to establish their own sizes as the ‘standard’. Many manufacturers also invented ingenious mechanisms to create movement or animation in the projected image. Today the range of slide types can seem quite bewildering.
