If I'm breathing, I'm reading (by Slightly Bookist)
Childhood by Jona Oberski, translated by Ralph Manheim | Slightly Bookist
https://slightlybookist.wordpress.com/2015/01/23/childhood-by-jona-oberski-translated-by-ralph-manheim
If I'm breathing, I'm reading. Childhood by Jona Oberski, translated by Ralph Manheim. January 23, 2015. Born in Amsterdam to Jewish parents, Oberski was just a year old when World War Two broke out. He published this slim autobiographical novel in 1978, almost forty years after the events in it, and it is a truly astonishing accomplishment. The novel opens in Bergen-Belsen, with the four-year-old narrator being reassured by his mother:. Despite the lack of analysis, or inserted reflection on what his pa...

https://slightlybookist.wordpress.com/2014/01
If I'm breathing, I'm reading. Looking back and ahead. January 15, 2014. In 2012 I had one clear favourite out of all the books I’d read: Helen DeWitt’s. This year I had no single best book. Here are my top ten books from 2013, plus a bonus one, in no particular order. Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer (which I reviewed. For the Globe and Mail). The Canvas by Benjamin Stein, translated from the German by Brian Zumhagen. Idiopathy by Sam Byers. For the National Post).

If I'm breathing, I'm reading. Why you should never read the blurb. February 10, 2015 4 Comments. I never read blurbs. I never have, not out of any particular reason, except possibly that summaries of novels rarely interest me. I don’t even open a book to read the first few pages. If I’m not going by reviews or recommendations, I really do judge books by their covers. It seems to work quite well for me. Last week I read Karen Joy Fowler’s. We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves. How can we not mention it?

The Paradise Engine | Where is Here?
https://whereishere.ca/category/the-paradise-engine
Category: The Paradise Engine. May 2, 2013. I really didn’t want. To turn into a Bunch of Links About That Book I Wrote, though that seems to be where it’s headed these days. Not forever, I hope. I went to the Bicentennial “celebrations” for the Battle of Fort York last weekend, and I had a lot of thoughts, but they’ve mostly bypassed the blogging stage and leapt straight into the chapter about The War of 1812. Laura Frey at Reading in Bed. Says some really smart things. April 11, 2013. I added a page.

Still frame extracted from the video and enhanced by my hubs. I’ve wanted to scuba dive with sharks ever since I qualified as a PADI diver, back in 1994. I find them fascinating rather than scary. (I leave you to decide what that says about me.). It was ace, even though the South Atlantic is really really cold in April. View WBEditor’s profile on Twitter. Commenta...

More wisdom from Carol Fisher Saller, whose keynote speech at the EAC Conference in June made me realize that grammar isn’t something fixed and rigid, that you study once and are done forever. Do you follow grammar rules that you don’t understand? Sentence 1. At the donut shop she had trouble getting her order out. Sentence 2. Hopefully, none of the donuts are gone. Laura Rock: Everybody Knows: Inequality

Laura's Own Unprocessed Project. Writing, of course. Thursday, 16 October 2014. Today I'm participating in Blog Action Day 2014. Along with 1500 others writing from more than 100 countries about the topic of inequality. Inequality is depressing and divisive, 100% bad news. Who wants to read bad news? First, to raise awareness. Today is also World Food Day. So, food and health care, both necessary to sustain life. What do they have to do with inequality? That's the equivalent of 2.5 USAs. It's the...From ...

Laura's Own Unprocessed Project. Writing, of course. Sunday, 16 November 2014. On Saturday I went with a friend to Inspire! Once, years ago, my family was sitting on the little strip of grass in the shadow of the CN Tower. We were eating a cheap lunch bought from a hotdog truck when I noticed the plaques. It seemed a strange coincidence that of all the places we could land in the Big Smoke, we had happened upon a space commemorating one of the literary icons of our village. Links to this post. Laura's Own Unprocessed Project. Writing, of course. Sunday, 11 August 2013. The course I was teaching ended last week, and my final marks have been submitted. Let summer begin- all three weeks that are left. Already, nights are chilly and a few orange-tinged maples have appeared. Time is short, using it well my challenge. So, reboot. As I type, bread dough is rising, chocolate-chip granola bars are cooling, and fresh ricotta is resting in the fridge, soon to be used in baked ziti. (Incidentally,...But t...

Laura's Own Unprocessed Project. Writing, of course. Thursday, 24 July 2014. The Half-life of Stories. In 2006 I bought a copy of Best American Short Stories. And read the whole thing, marveling at the range of voices showcased in the anthology, the writers’ skillful execution of narrative. Until then I had not been a regular consumer of the BASS series, but Ann Patchett. Was the editor that year. I loved her novel Bel Canto. 8217;s disproportionate representation in the pages of BASS. Slightly Bonkers
Sunday, August 19, 2012. Tuesday, June 19, 2012. Long Time, No See . I know it's been a while, but I thought what better way to resurrect the blog, than to celebrate the end of the schools that led to it's very VERY long pause! Slightly Bookist | If I'm breathing, I'm reading
If I'm breathing, I'm reading. Hausfrau by Jill Alexander Essbaum. April 3, 2015. In the novel much is made of or perhaps I should say. Anna makes much of. Anna’s predicament of loneliness and purposelessness is far from uncommon, in life or in literature, but is exacerbated by her lack of a life beyond her family and household, and intensified further by her foreignness in a place that is hostilely indifferent to foreignness. There’s a lot of good writing in. Reading around the world: Afghanistan. Apart...
