The Slow Woodworker

Saturday, July 4, 2015. Cherry logs have started turning up at the log dump in droves over the past few years. Some are diseased, but others are in beautiful condition. The cherry street trees in Vancouver are not the well-known black cherry of eastern Canada and the US, or commercial cherries grown for fruit. Rather they are are almost entirely cultivars of Prunus serrulata, Japanese flowering cherries, grown for their outstanding blossoms. He was not happy but we got some interesting slabs out of it...

The Slow Woodworker: More Wood Contemplation

http://slowwoodworker.blogspot.com/2015/06/more-wood-contemplation.html

Sunday, June 7, 2015. This is a very common local softwood, although it is not mentioned in my go-to tree book "Street Trees of Vancouver", which surprises me. I find it in the log dump all the time, it is one of the most common trees to show up there. Some logs can be in the range of 2 feet in diameter. I am not 100% sure that it truly is "Monterey Cypress" ( Cupressus macrocarpa). The wood invites comparison to Port Orford cedar in my mind. The aroma is similar, and delightful, but a bit sharper or...

The Slow Woodworker: Contemplating Wood

http://slowwoodworker.blogspot.com/2015/05/contemplating-wood.html

Saturday, May 30, 2015. At the IP Celebration earlier in the month, and coming home took the opportunity to reread A Cabinetmaker's Notebook by James Krenov. I am extremely fortunate to have had access for nearly ten years now to a near limitless supply of locally grown woods, in raw log form. And hopefully I will continue to have the same access in the future! With a couple of chainsaw mills and lots of friends, I have milled up over 200 logs into planks. Manitoba Maple. Known as Box Elder in the USA.

The Slow Woodworker: June 2015

http://slowwoodworker.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 14, 2015. I cut from this same log on both visits, which were a couple years apart. The other trees which had come down were both hung up in other trees so I did not go anywhere near them! The slabs were about 16" wide and I cut them at 8' so they would fit in the truck. Four years later when I went back to cut some more, the wood had started to stain quite a bit. The amount of waste is incredibly dismaying. It cracks freely at any excuse and it also warps tremendously. Sunday, June 7, 2015.

The Slow Woodworker: March 2015

http://slowwoodworker.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 30, 2015. Plane Underway and Other Ramblings. Well after my last post lamenting my unhappiness at my jointer plane and stating that I was thinking of gluing some 'extensions' on the side to give it a bit more heft, my friend Bill dropped me a note and asked if I needed a piece of lignum to glue on the bottom to see if that would help. Wow! So now I have the possibility of three jointer planes: Jarrah on the left, Macassar ebony middle, and my existing plane made of ekki. Then last week I wa...

Barbara Shelton: January 2010

http://barbarashelton.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 26, 2010. Some More Slow Progress. I had some trouble getting momentum back after Christmas break, but I am reaching the point where the finished piece doesn't seem too far off. After a few days of planing and flattening the back-panel it was glued in and work began on the frames for the glass doors. Frame members fixed and ready for glue. Poor unfinished cabinet collecting dust and feeling neglected. Junior (a classmate) was working on a new counter for the Gumboot Cafe that is next to ...

Barbara Shelton: November 2009

http://barbarashelton.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, November 22, 2009. Well, half the class was down sick throughout the past month, myself included, and it took me a while to feel like I made enough progress to post a decent update. While trying to get my momentum back (and to procrastinate on another design decision) I made a 1/16" chisel. My dad gave me a set of old needle files he found in his shop, they have been perfect for making small chisels and knives, just the right size and keep a good sharp edge. I decided to do the skinning. There wa...

Barbara Shelton: Upholstery

http://barbarashelton.blogspot.com/2011/09/upholstery.html

Sunday, September 25, 2011. I have been meaning to post something for a while just to save the blog from death but haven't been doing much in the way of woodworking. Thought this may be worthy of posting. Earlier in the year we took an upholstery course from a local upholsterer who is in the very early stages of setting up a school. There is more to it than I would have thought. Like wood, you have to be aware of the grain direction of the fabric and the matching of color, patterns and types. I think Ill...

Barbara Shelton: January 2012

http://barbarashelton.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 20, 2012. Except for being trapped behind a computer all day to generate the funds to be able to set up shop. Amazing how draining a desk job can be. There are issues letting go of off-cuts, even other people's. We were the benefactors of a friend's recent move to the opposite coast. A pile of local maple. More adopted wood and future kiln site. After so much time going by, rough milling some wood to make sawhorses was super exciting, and the more time I spend here the more my hands start...

Barbara Shelton: A Little Something

http://barbarashelton.blogspot.com/2012/06/little-something.html

Sunday, June 17, 2012. Finished the sister plane from a tulipwood blank I had at IP. I build the first little one for softening edges and other small tasks. This one is a gift for my sister who just accepted her first teaching position as a high school shop teacher. June 17, 2012 at 10:02 AM. Nice work, Barb. The perfect gift. ― Craig. Friday, March 30, 2012. Thursday, March 15, 2012. I've got a new project on the go while i wait on the upholstery for the ottoman. This one is different for me in a few ways. first, it's being made for claire and i specifically. second, i'm using some commercial veneer. We've long needed a place to file our papers, so i'm combining this with a record cabinet. It's been fun working with commercial veneer. just fun to learn some new techniques. Barbara Shelton: October 2009

http://barbarashelton.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, October 25, 2009. Good News and Bad News. Progress has been somewhat stunted by the still wet Boxwood in the kiln. I pulled it out a few days ago, the meter said it was dry but when I cut into it on the bandsaw it did the banana. I need it for all the frame members for the sides and doors, maybe I should have made the cabinet curved, then all the bending would have been done for me, heh. But the marquetry is now done and went pretty well! Cutting out the leaf parts. Tuesday, October 13, 2009.

Barbara Shelton: Keeping Crafty

http://barbarashelton.blogspot.com/2010/11/keeping-crafty.html

Saturday, November 13, 2010. Since leaving school I have had to take a desk-job to counter the after-effects of going two years without an income. At times it feels as if staring at the computer screen is slowly shriveling my soul into a rasin (at least it's not a chickpea). To help keep my hands busy with something I took some quilting classes to get me back into sewing until I can do some woodworking again. Here is the result:. November 13, 2010 at 9:47 PM. Clever way to keep sharp! Victoria, BC, Canada.

Barbara Shelton: March 2010

http://barbarashelton.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 24, 2010. The stand has been started now and was going relatively quick. As soon as I started to sense some real progress happening, I came down with a nasty cold and haven't been able to work on it for three weeks. Here it is so far:. The very first rough mock up, just to get the height and proportions right. The cabinet will be seated into the tops of the legs and be attached with brackets to two stretchers from underneath. Had to spend a bit of time straightening the grain in the Kwila.

Slow Work

Thursday, 15 September 2011. This one needs a little bio. I wrote this during those long suspenseful days of waiting. We cannot confine this time. It seeps like a wound. Still raw at the seams;. Worn red from weeping. We wait with the others in line. 8216;til sharply summoned. To enter the temple of dreams. Where spent gods lie sleeping. We study the scene for a sign. Of a miracle in the round;. For we are powerless it seems. In this vigil we’re keeping. We establish a rhythm and rhyme. Green sea that sw...
