San Lucas Toliman: Tecun Uman celebrations

The dance (Better on video! Tecun Uman was the Mayan leader who led the last resistance to the Spanish Conquistadores. The Quetzal is a bird with a red breast, and it is Guatemalas national symbol. The legend is that its breast became red with the blood of the dying Tecun Uman. The Quetzal cannot live in captivity. Students celebrate Tecun Uman day recalling their Mayan roots. An independent jury picks the winner, who represents the school on various occasions. School marimba provides music.

In 2014, school graduations, we had fourteen students in the flag bearer parties - the best students in their schools. Some of our success stories. 2015 - first semester: over 60% of honor students in the largest school in town were sponsored students. Carlos graduated in second place in high school. He is the co-ordinator of the local small coffee producers co-op. Elba graduated top of her class and now works as a back cashier. She's studying to be a lawyer - one of only six who will graduate.

ENCAR high school top student Ada Elisa - an SLT Scholar - had the honor of carrying the school flag. Pavarotti junior high school graduation. The top students who are not graduating are given the flags by the top graduating students. Both students receiving the flags are SLT scholars. A wonderful day - made possible through the generosity of sponsors. Amongst the poor people of San Lucas, the graduation of a son or daughter is a major event - be it from grade school, junior high school or high school.

INDEPENDENCE DAY,September 15. September 15 is Guatemalan Independence Day. In many towns, schools have pipe and drum bands, and band members spend weeks preparing for the big parade. As well as the bands and batonists, there are folk and modern dancing demonstrations and gymnastic displays. In the schools, there are singing, poetry, art and oratorio festivals and competitions. The Independence Day parades take place on three consecutive days. Click on any photo for more!
