SMCNOLA: 01/24/08

http://smcnola.blogspot.com/2008_01_24_archive.html

Thursday, January 24, 2008. Day Seventeen: January 2008. Day Seventeen: Thursday, January 24. Today’s Katie’s REAL birthday! We had her party on Tuesday, but we’ve kept the celebration going until now! Happy day again, Katie! We wondered if Habitat would call the day off, but we hustled onto the bus as if they would not. Just as we headed for the gate, one of the Habitat staffers called us and told us to skip out. We all headed to Rosie’s in the rain and kicked things into high gear. Matt W., Aaron, ...

SMCNOLA: Day Twenty-Two: January 2008

Wednesday, January 30, 2008. Day Twenty-Two: January 2008. Day Twenty-Two: Tuesday, January 29. A clear morning awaited us, despite predictions of thunderstorms for our packing session. A few folks ran off to the ferry to bring back beignets for breakfast, while another set headed out to Rosie’s to do some last minute touchups. The rest started clearing out the bus, the warehouse, the tent, and every other place that we had left our stuff. Maybe we’ll be back in just a few short weeks. We’re very t...

Sunday, January 27, 2008. Day Twenty: January 2008. Day Twenty: Sunday, January 27. We came out of our work zones again when Jerrad showed up with our beloved puppies, now named Rosie and Leo. They have opened their eyes now, making Lindsay Ryberg comment on the fact that the puppies are opening their eyes just as our eyes have been opened to a whole new way of seeing the world. Our hours today total 262; our running total now is 5268. Posted by SMC New Orleans Relief. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

http://smcnola.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 1, 2008. A few more friends. Some further reports on our NOLA friends have trickled in. Jan Term '07 students will remember Cindy and David Franatovich and their grown-up kids Dara and Dustin. They, along with Cindy's parents Connie and Jerry LeRouge (from Jan Term '06 and '07) are all safe in Vicksburg, Mississippi. '07ers will remember that we had the greatest crawfish boil of all time at Cindy and David's house out in Slidell. Sarah knew that Red Perkins (Rosie's backdoor neighbor) h...

Saturday, January 26, 2008. Day Nineteen: January 2008. Day Nineteen: Saturday, January 26. We crossed over the 5000-hour mark today! And what a workday it was! We had a special visitor today: Dustin Cramer, a Saint Mary’s alumnus who has followed our trips for the last two years. He came out and worked with us as we installed flooring today and he finally got a firsthand look at the whole SMC NOLA experience. We were glad he was with us. Another huge set of people took on cabinet installation in 4011&#4...

Tuesday, January 25, 2011. Day Seventeen: Pouring the Floor and the SAD Office. Just as we began to pour the floor, Charles took Shawny and Scott into town to chase down some camera lenses that our beloved support colleague Renee had sent from California. They have been held up in Customs for a week or so now, so we finally just drove down there to try to get them out. January 25, 2011 at 7:27 AM. SMC Dominica: Day Sixteen: Rigorous, Arduous, and Slippery

http://smcdominica.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-sixteen-rigorous-arduous-and.html

Monday, January 24, 2011. Day Sixteen: Rigorous, Arduous, and Slippery. The hike is about eight miles long and it involves climbing about 2000 vertical feet then dropping down 1000 or more before going up again to get to a huge overlook above the lake. The trail is apparently always muddy – really really really muddy – so hikers get a one-inch or so platform on the bottoms of their boots to complicate things a bit more. The pool at the bottom brought great relief, especially because it turned out to be a...

Wednesday, January 26, 2011. Day Eighteen: Farewell to the Site. We also focused on our interviews and other video work for the projects that we will complete for our final work in this course. We are doing a public presentation of some of our final work on campus during the first week of the spring semester, but we are waiting for confirmation on the time and location of that event. Charles and the workers were all in cahoots to throw a big party for us tonight and they did a great job of pulling things...

http://smcdominica.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-fifteen-of-rasta-jellies-and.html

Sunday, January 23, 2011. Day Fifteen: Of Rasta Jellies and Cutlasses. We cranked things up early today to make a very important run into town: for shopping! We haven't focused on souvenirs (other than pictures and memories) at all so today we set aside the morning to go to Roseauto buy some (for ourselves and no doubt for some of YOU! And Nutella (our newest addition to the staples that we carry with us every day. (The other two main staples are Tapatio hot sauce and an assortment of Clif Bars.). We hus...

Saturday, January 22, 2011. Day Fourteen: Mr. Sparkle and the Dance of the Plywood. Day Fourteen: Mr. Sparkle and The Dance of the Plywood. Scott came up with an ingenious use of our battery-powered drills when he rigged a piece of bent rebar into it to use as a mechanical stirrer. It made all of the difference in the world to be able to really mix the concrete properly with something other than a shovel, pick, or pitchfork. January 22, 2011 at 12:50 PM.
