Smoke ‘n’ Fire 400. September 7, 2014. Bike Riding and Racing. I’m excited to announce my participation in the first running of the Smoke ‘n’ Fire 400. I’ll admit that I’m taking on this challenge with a minimum of preparation or advance knowledge. Unlike the Oregon Outback. That I knew about over a year in advance (and even had time to build a bicycle. For) I found out about this event just over two weeks before the scheduled. Despite the short timeline, I started scheming up ways to make the ride happen.

Smoke N Fire 2014 Idaho Bikepacking Bliss. Posted Oct 19, 2014. Beginning of the 2014 Smoke N Fire bikepacking race. My muscles were tired from tensing up during the long downhill to Deadwood Lake. I flexed and bore-down as if I were trying to fold my body into itself. It was a futile attempt to stay warm. Futile indeed. My water was frozen. My face was frozen. My fingers and toes hurt. And it was only going to get colder. Put this race on your calendar. The inaugural Smoke N Fire. The route was forgivin...

About us – Contact us. Me, Iron Mel and Tyson on the Tour Divide 2012… heading toward Polaris, Montana. The question many people have is… What is bikepacking? Simply put, it’s like backpacking but you’re using your bike instead of your feet (mostly) as your form of transport. Lots of people bikepack in endurance races lasting from one night to a month or more. Others, just go out, alone or with friends, for a night out away from home. SpoK Werks on Flickr. July 23, 2015. Learning- I learned three things. It takes a lot of time to train for racing. Racing is hard and hazardous. I DON’T LIKE racing! All three events provided additional experience points in the areas of spills and thrills. Close calls and crashes are common occurrences when racing. It was exciting to be a part of the energy and excitement surrounding the races. I was able to meet and interact with some legends in the mountain bike racing world. Functional Age versus Actual Age.
