Musings in and out of Africa. Tuesday, 7 May 2013. The Beautiful Island of Mauritius, Part 5. The food of Mauritius. Naturally, seafood is the speciality of Mauritian. The main recreational sport on the island is deep-sea fishing. Don’t miss out on horse-racing. Nightclubs are situated all over the island, but the best are in the big-resort hotels, with cabaret, local d-j’s, dinner dancing and so forth. Unique to the Indian Ocean Island, is the sega. A dance accompanied by calypso-style singing, the musi...

MozamWeek: Not all talk, but not all that great at doin' what needs to be done
http://mozamweek.blogspot.com/2014/11/not-all-talk-but-not-all-that-great-at.html
In Tete, Mozambique! Saturday, November 29, 2014. Not all talk, but not all that great at doin' what needs to be done. I have been a frustrated literacy specialist for about 15 years. I'll just admit it. I haven't ever taught anyone to read. I never have claimed to teach, but to train trainers and develop materials and to research how two very different languages can be used in education of some very special people in a very difficult situation. It might not work. It might not change the world. God is go...

After 5 months living with her in Alabama, we spent 5 months living in England. Now we are spending about 2 months living with my in-laws in Sweden. For some people, this would be a nightmare. MozamWeek: Nyungwe
http://mozamweek.blogspot.com/p/nyungwe.html
In Tete, Mozambique! Nyungwe is a language spoken in west central Mozambique. No real statistic has been verified as to number of speakers - somewhere between 300,000 and 500,000 probably (loosely based on census stats for districts where Nyungwe is likely to be spoken). Sample Nyungwe texts can be found at LIDEMO.NET. In addition to these publications, there is a dictionary and grammar volume published in 1899/1900 by the Catholics. More recently, there is a grammar/dictionary done by the Combonianos.
