Tim Loh's Paintings: August 2015
http://medicineman-tim.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 30, 2015. Paint Myself Into A Corner. I was at this pavilion like structure. It had two opposing arcs of pillars, standing under a roof, otherwise exposed to the elements. When the sun tilted to one side of the pavilion, it casted long shadows of these pillars across the mosaic pavilion floor, ending up on the opposite side. I found this composition alluring. Since I had so much fun painting my roof tops, another architectural themed painting, I made this my next project. I liked my founda...

Tim Loh's Paintings: February 2015

Saturday, February 21, 2015. Works By High School Students. The little jaunt to a local high school to teach students how to paint with a Chinese brush was a huge success. The kids were Juniors enrolled in the Mandarin class at this high school. We had about 15 participants and most of them had not held a Chinese brush before. I showed them the steps in painting a ram, as detailed in my last blog "Rehearsal" and here are the results. The paintings were done on red construction paper for 2 reasons. It def...

Tim Loh's Paintings: May 2015
http://medicineman-tim.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 26, 2015. I was all giddy when I left my friend's house. I left with a few stalks of peony from my friend's garden. I didn't do it surreptitiously; I snipped the specimen with my friends knowledge of course. I was giddy because I finally had the courage to teach people how to paint from a real object. Modeling unfortunately is not emphasized at all these days; at least I've only had one teacher that championed that need. The rest of them was just do as I do. If not, what defines success?

Tim Loh's Paintings: Better Roof Tops
http://medicineman-tim.blogspot.com/2015/08/better-roof-tops.html
Saturday, August 8, 2015. With no hesitation I went for my second attempt at roof tops with aplomb. Knowing what was wrong with my first trial should make this child's play. Indeed it was. It didn't take me long to lay down my patches. I added windows to the houses on the left, now that there was room to reveal them. The mitred roofs looked fine. This should be easy. Somehow things still did not seem right. I didn't want to be agnosonosic, but I really had no clue. I just trusted my instincts. As I was r...

Tim Loh's Paintings: April 2015
http://medicineman-tim.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Tuesday, April 28, 2015. The Last Leg Of My Journey. It didn't take me that long to sense something is not quite right with my last painting. The left and right darkest patches at the bottom seemed stoic, to the point of non-participation, I mused. I suppose the composition fit in the grand scheme of things; the left side being solid and dense, the right side vague and sparse, so it subscribed to the. I trimmed a few pieces of the same semi-sized Xuan and painted a few alternatives to the left bottom.

Tim Loh's Paintings: Chronicle Of Shadows
http://medicineman-tim.blogspot.com/2015/07/chronicle-of-shadows.html
Monday, July 13, 2015. I was just strolling around when the shadows from trees caught my attention. It wasn't even late in the afternoon, yet the shadows were long and interesting. Intrigued was I. I finally figured out that I was on the high point of a slope, thus the shadows were casted against the incline, as if it was a cinema screen. I perceived a strong composition of patterns. A lattice work of bright and dark, and nothing else. I wanted to see if I could translate that onto paper. I was paying mo...

Tim Loh's Paintings: October 2014
http://medicineman-tim.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Sunday, October 26, 2014. There came a time when I was just killing time, sitting at my desk. I wished I had a drum set. I did have one for a while, as a custodian of a drum set for a beginners orchestra. Those were happy days. I am sure my neighbors didn't think so! So I ended up doodling. I had taken some picture of this martial artist in a park and I've observed him for a long time. His energy intrigued me. Somehow I opened my album at his page. I grabbed my brush and scratched on my ruled notebook.

Tim Loh's Paintings: September 2014
http://medicineman-tim.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Thursday, September 25, 2014. I was quoting Cougar in saying that I was holding on too tight and have lost my edge and I was frustrated. My solution to that was to hang everything up for a while, and not feel guilty about it. After all I am doing this for fun, and my livelihood does not depend on my lifting a paint brush. For anybody who has come through this gate, we know that we are just pretending to not think about it consciously. the computing still happens, just not on the desktop. My first step wa...

Tim Loh's Paintings: March 2015

Thursday, March 19, 2015. When Is It Too Much Information. The classical Chinese garden in town asked for permission to use my rams painting for promotional purpose. Obviously that was a feather in my hat, a shot in my arm. I had done Chinese Brush demonstration for them in the past, so I dug up some of the drafts I did then. The pavilion always interests me, so I shall do another one. I really went to town with this one. It is interesting to compare this work with my previous attempts. My first attempt ...
