Wednesday, April 29, 2015. Plague Land by S.D. Sykes (MYS Syk). England in 1350 is a country devastated by the Plague. Oswald de Lacy has been a novice in a monastery since he was seven but when his father and two older brothers die of the plague, he returns home to become Lord of Somershill Manor - at the age of eighteen. This book captures eloquently the unrest and distrust that existed in that devastating time. Oswald must battle not just his inexperience and the lack of trust that people place in...

Wednesday, November 26, 2014. Lila by Marilynne Robinson (FIC Rob). Sometimes old men do foolish things, says the Rev. John Ames. And according to his small congregation, he has. At 67, long-time widower Rev. Ames has reconciled himself to loneliness. Then one Sunday morning a young woman escapes the rain by stepping inside his small church. It's Lila, a woman with an old knife and a hidden past. These three books are interconnected, but you can read Lila. Sunday, November 23, 2014. It is 7:00 am in Phil...

IPL Staff Reviews: The Dress Shop of Dreams by Menna Van Praag FIC Pra
http://iplstaff.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-dress-shop-of-dreams-by-menna-van.html
Saturday, August 8, 2015. The Dress Shop of Dreams by Menna Van Praag FIC Pra. Magical realism - I don't know who came up with this term but it certainly fits this book. It is a normal book with a little magic thrown in. Etta owns a dress shop. It may look like a regular shop but when Etta adds a stitch or two the dress takes on the ability to unleash the 'hidden desires' of the woman who wears it. Tuesday, October 28, 2014. The Sea Garden by Marcia Willett FIC Wil. With Maeve Binchy and Rosamund Pilcher both gone, Marcia Willett is the only author I have found who comes close to writing that type of novel. It is filled with characters whose lives are intertwined. I love the descriptions of the English countryside and the interactions of the characters. A great book to read while enjoying a cuppa! Monday, October 27, 2014. Fetch the Devil 364.152 Ric. The case was botched from the beginning. Th...

Thursday, July 30, 2015. The Melody Lingers On by Mary Higgins Clark FIC Cla. Fair is fair. After writing quite unfavorably about Clark's previous release, Death Wears a Beauty Mask. It was just days later that my name made it to the top of the holds list for The Melody Lingers On. Where is the money? Was his son involved? And where does his former paramour get all of her money? Good potential. It could have been so much better. Clark was the queen of mystery for a long time. Stories were well-crafte...

Friday, July 31, 2015. My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman (FIC Bac). The author's first book ( A Man Called Ove. Was written from the perspective of a 59-year-old man. This one, written completely from the perspective of an almost eight-year-old, is a wonder. The fairy tales are woven into and around the other plots and everything ties together at the end. I loved this book. I think Fredrik Backman is my new favorite author. Click here to check our catalog for availability.
