The tiny metal hole is right up against my eye. I am looking through it. I can see the entrance to a lift, and a stretch of corridor. There are doors attached to the corridor that lead into apartments. I am looking outside of my flat. A man and a lady walk into my field of view. The lady is a sexy lady and the man is a handsome and rugged man. They are an excellent match. They are both physically perfect. I think about the differences between men and woman. I decide that there are no differences.

I have been watching at the door for an hour and nothing has happened. I have a flask of tea and I drink from it every now and again. I can feel time slipping away. Every ten minutes I change eye so that my face doesn't seize up and I don't die from shock. Oh what a day. You win some you lose some. It is a game of two halves. Put my eggs in a basket.

Three entries today in the book. The man and the woman walked into the lift and then went out again twenty minutes later. A man with glasses went into the lift. He was picking his nose very aggressively before he went in and I wrote down 'When human beings are by themselves they are often disgusting.' Then I crossed that out and wrote 'Human beings are disgusting.'. I underline 'Ban all children' so that I know it is sarcasm. I am scared that I will look back on this in sixty years and not be able to...

For a terrifying moment I think that I have given the game away. The couple are there again and I sneeze, loudly. They stop their physical flirting and stand totally motionless. They look at each other, bursting to laugh. The man trots silently over to my door, with his finger pressed against his lips. The girl starts to laugh and he looks back at her motioning downwards with his hand to keep her quiet. After a minute he turns back to the lift and enters it with his girl.

The short man has started carrying odd objects with him. He enters the lift each time with an object. Sometimes a huge leg of ham. Sometimes a piano stool. Sometimes he enters with a gigantic fish or a Christmas tree. I just can't work him out.

My entire life is spent trying to work out what the short man is doing. I want to know all about his life and about his routine and habits. I want to understand everything about him. Where is he putting these things? Where is he getting them? How does he leave the flat? I think that this is unlikely.

The short man is waiting for the lift. In his hand he holds a frozen leg of lamb. He is waiting patiently in his smart, outlandish outfit. His foot taps on the ground. He has been waiting a long time. I suddenly realise that he hasn't pressed the button. I look again. He is looking straight at me, grinning. He walks towards me. Every step is like a crazy dance. He is elegant and precise with each step. I can see his face properly. Let me in and I will tell you all of my secrets.'. He is toying with me?
