One of Africa's smallest and poorest nations, The Gambia ranks 168th out of 187 countries in the 2011 United Nations Human Development Report. Poverty is extremely widespread, with three quarters of the rural population classified as poor. The harsh reality is that most poor households do not generate sufficient income from their farming activities to feed themselves, let alone to maintain a decent standard of living and be able to progress from subsistence to more productive, sustainable farming systems.
