Never had a friend like Jeannie – new vintage women
https://newvintagewomen.wordpress.com/2015/08/11/never-had-a-friend-like-jeannie
They were on to something. Never had a friend like Jeannie. Even if you’ve never seen the show I Dream of Jeannie,. Chances are you at least know the theme song, and its enduring appeal which has outlasted the run of the show itself. While Jeannie’s subservience to Major Nelson fits in with the myth that a genie is subservient to the person who rubs the lamp, it seems a bit odd that Major Nelson would feel the need to be manipulative and condescending towards Jeannie. Yes, Jeannie was subservient as ...

Some Reflections on This Project – new vintage women

They were on to something. Some Reflections on This Project. Fun fact: Someone found my latest blog post by searching kaitlyn bristowe sucks. My goal was simple: to explore these feminist themes through writing. I initially wondered what I had gotten myself into and wondered why I picked something that wasn’t going to be that easy to write about. I could have picked something easy, like, I dunnocoffee. But it’s the story of my life I guess. So onwards and upwards! In a way, shows like this inspired the o...

new vintage women – Page 2 – They were on to something
https://newvintagewomen.wordpress.com/page/2
They were on to something. There, I said it. It’s a topic that people have strong opinions about, and one that TV story lines tend to be very cautious in handling. Was a hit TV show starring Bea Arthur as an outspoken, thrice divorced woman in her late-40s. The show was a spin-off of. All in the Family. A show known for tackling tough social issues, and Maude. And so it did, in a two-part episode titled “ Maude’s Dilemma. Episodes of season 1 of. Despite these two relatively “ground-breaking”...A show th...

Feminist Icon: Clair Huxtable – new vintage women
https://newvintagewomen.wordpress.com/2015/07/17/feminist-icon-clair-huxtable
They were on to something. Feminist Icon: Clair Huxtable. Despite the scandal surrounding the man who played her on-screen husband, it would be impossible to discuss feminism in classic TV without talking about Clair Huxtable. Where do we draw the line between advancing the cause of feminism and creating a new ideal for women that is impossible to achieve and sets us up for failure? Isn’t that what started the feminist movement in the first place? Sarah is a writer, among other things, living in Toronto&...

They were on to something. Plus ça Change, Plus la Même Chose. This is my second post about this episode, but I can’t help it. There’s so much to talk about! My other post regarding the episode of Designing Women. Entitled “ The Strange Case of Clarence and Anita. And then you could graphically describe Judge Thomas’ private parts, and then you could kinda top it all off with a story about a public hair on a Coke can…and Ms. Hill you do realize that the penalty for perjury is 20 years? If someone breaks ...

They were on to something. Holy Girl Power, Batman! Yvonne Craig passed away last week at the age of 78. While the name may not sound familiar to some, no doubt the name Batgirl rings some bells. Craig was best known for her role as Batgirl on the third and final season of the 1960s television series Batman. It also helped that shortly thereafter, the quintessential channel for 90s kids, YTV, began broadcasting re-runs of the TV series on a daily basis. Batgirl was not the only female character on the sh...

https://newvintagewomen.wordpress.com/2015/07/21/this-seasons-bachelorette-sucks-and-thats-exactly-why-shes-awesome
They were on to something. This Season’s Bachelorette Sucks…And That’s Exactly Why She’s Awesome. My purpose in creating this blog was to focus on women in classic TV shows, which in my mind meant the 1980s or older. But there is one contemporary show I feel I need to weigh in on: The Bachelorette. And not because it’s a terrible show and a guilty pleasure, but because of the criticism and hate and cyberbullying that Kaitlyn Bristowe, this season’s bachelorette, has received. Is our society really still ...
