Two Social Scientists Walk Into a Kitchen…. The Normative Graduate Student. August 10, 2012. Before starting graduate school, we said we’d do it on. Terms It wouldn’t become our lives. Grad school would be a job, like any other, and we would maintain a home life, a social life, and our sanity. Want vs. Need: It’s Not My Bag | Two Social Scientists Walk Into a Kitchen…

Two Social Scientists Walk Into a Kitchen…. Baked Beans: so slow, so easy, so good. The Horny Elephant in the Room →. Want vs. Need: It’s Not My Bag. December 1, 2011. Back in mine and Lauren’s days working at the co-op (aka 4 months ago), I used my position as a cashier to undertake a modest experiment. My goal was to determine if, and to what extent, my word choice could affect someone’s likelihood of using a bag for their groceries. I would ask some people if they. A bag, and some people if they.

Two Social Scientists Walk Into a Kitchen…. Eating Local and Missing the Point. Want vs. Need: It’s Not My Bag →. Baked Beans: so slow, so easy, so good. November 28, 2011. One of the hardest things about life as a graduate student has been retaining our passion for and routine of cooking delicious things on a regular basis. Like every working person in America, we don’t have much free time. (Although, as of 2010, the average American watched 35 hours of TV per week…so clearly we have. 1 onion, chopped.

Two Social Scientists Walk Into a Kitchen…. Meal or No Meal? Baked Beans: so slow, so easy, so good. →. Eating Local and Missing the Point. October 24, 2011. Eat local. Eat local, buy local, eat local. Go organic! Eat organic, buy organic! The resounding call echoes around campus, around town, around the nation. The movement for locally-based economies and organic goods is a small percentage of the market, but it’s growing. Great! Local and organic – that’s what the world needs. Right? Meal or No Meal?

Two Social Scientists Walk Into a Kitchen…. The Horny Elephant in the Room. Favorite Quotes, part 2 of n: Geertz. December 6, 2011. On what it’s like to be an anthropologist:. But that, along with plaguing subtle people with obtuse questions, is what being an ethnographer is like p.29. One starts any effort at thick description…from a state of general bewilderment as to what the devil is going on p.27. This entry was posted in books. The Horny Elephant in the Room. Two Social Scientists Walk Into a Kitchen…. Want vs. Need: It’s Not My Bag. Favorite Quotes, part 2 of n: Geertz →. The Horny Elephant in the Room. December 3, 2011. On a recent episode. Of Living on Earth, Janet Ranganathan. Agriculture is the hungry elephant. And while elephants in the room are by their nature silent, I argue that there is another, bigger, more silent one that must be addressed. Let’s call him the horny elephant. Or the Catholic elephant. What he represents is population. It’s not hard...

the rest is just whatever: October 2010

http://toffeeorange.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

The rest is just whatever. Deep in the heart of fall. Did some research and found out that I get paid less than the maximum amount people on unemployment benefits in California can get. That's okay, because the cost of living here is low, and life is rich, bubbling to the brim and overflowing! Anyway, my job next year is going to pay me 5-6 times more than now. The Hartman Conference and Retreat Center. Laura, Adam and Josey during breakfast. PSCG folk having lunch. Becca checking out a bird box. In othe...

the rest is just whatever: May 2011

http://toffeeorange.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

The rest is just whatever. I anticipate baking at least a hundred cupcakes this weekend for the 2 cookouts, baptisms and my upcoming defense! For my practice defense yesterday I made 3 types of cupcakes - applesauce, nutella and peanut butter, and strawberry. I initially thought this would be a wedding in the middle of the boonies, but Isaac, the Hollemans and myself somehow had a gazillion adventures in 3 days. This included. Laughing about the world not ending on Saturday. Having the cook at the Virgin...

the rest is just whatever: spring things

http://toffeeorange.blogspot.com/2011/05/spring-things.html

The rest is just whatever. We are in spring, or perhaps summer. The weather has been spectacular and a great respite from the rain of the last few weeks. A lot has been going on, as befitting of summer - softball practice, biking, baking, hiking, attempts at tennis, going to parties/dinners/gatherings - so there's a lot to be thankful for. Even though some of those dinners were farewell dinners. Ark, Dimitri, me, Annie, Esther, Jodie, May and Jim. Jin, Nilla, Hyeri, Kristen, Mike, Myro, Me and PDan.

http://toffeeorange.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

The rest is just whatever. No day like a snowday! Turned out to be quite a nice day after all. And quite a pleasant week, too. Our world has become a snow globe. Snow everywhere, up in the air. Right now Becca is sitting on the carpet watching Chris play my guitar. He is much better at the guitar than I am. We just spent the evening making crepes with chicken, veggies and tomato marinara, followed by dessert crepes with yogurt, chocolate chips, honey, chocolate fudge, strawberries and syrup (! To see so ...

The rest is just whatever. Ps People who say the countryside is boring are completely out of their minds and are the same people who run into quarter-life and mid-life crisis because they are inherent boring people unable to seize opportunities. Also, people need to realize that sometimes, you don't just wait for opportunities - you create them. Briefly, I'm going to show y'all how a sawmill on the K-Farm works. You can see the flat top of the wood now. This trunk is going to be turned into. I'm on a pec...

The rest is just whatever. Nate and Nora at Dartmouth College, on the way to lunch. The undergrads at Dartmouth are way more conservative than our Penn State kids. It was a pretty warm day but all the kids on the lawn were wearing t-shirts and shorts. Back at Penn State the kids have been taking everything off (guys shirtless and girls in bikinis). Down on Cape Cod. We showed up in Boston just in time to help Tabby pack. The USPO in Beacon Hill. No roadtrip is without misadventure. From your own site.

The rest is just whatever. The last blog post. I've decided to start a new blog to mark the post-defense, pre-employment interim period right here. Kat at David K's Vista. Whipple Dam State Park. The latest Gnome in the forest. The good times roll. Memorial Day Weekend, and this past week, was highly enjoyable and memorable on at least two fronts. We will do this in chronological order. Political and Social Science

Political and Social Science. Seminar 10: Using Formal Game Theory in Case Studies. April 22, 2015. April 22, 2015. In this seminar the link between case study methods and research design and formal models of politics are considered. We show spatial models of politics can be used as a bridge between in-depth case study research and more formalised models of politics developed by game theorists, when conducting research on the strategic interactions between actors in a political system. Each legislative n...
