Kelly's Sociology Blog: Fitness
http://kellybsocblog.blogspot.com/2013/08/fitness.html
Sunday, August 18, 2013. For my blog post this week I decided to analyze the cultural “object” of fitness, which is a major social practice. To analyze fitness through a sociological lens, we must consider its material and nonmaterial culture. Society has created an idealization of the “perfect” human, which is one who is attractive and fit. The question is, do these two go hand-in-hand? Many people believe that in order to be attractive, you must be fit. But when did this thought-process start? Back in ...

Kelly's Sociology Blog: The sociological imagination and me
http://kellybsocblog.blogspot.com/2013/08/hieveryone-my-name-is-kelly-barker-and.html
Monday, August 12, 2013. The sociological imagination and me. My name is Kelly Barker and I’m from Hermosa Beach, CA. I’m (unfortunately) going to be a senior in the fall. I’ve had the best three years at UCSB; I never want to leave! I want to know when these practices started, and how they differ among societies. August 14, 2013 at 4:21 PM. I never considered the colors attributed to gender and how it was decided blue=boy and pink=girl. Sports also interest me because they used to only be for males ...

My Life Along With Everything Else: Ambiguous Me
http://societyvstheindividual.blogspot.com/2013/08/ambiguous-me.html
My Life Along With Everything Else. Saturday, August 31, 2013. In all my years of living (admittedly not that long) I have never been just one thing. I have never acted just one way. In fact, all the pieces that make up myself are so very different, I find myself stuck in a crossroads most of the times with who I am, who I should be, who I want to be, and who I am to everyone else. so-she-ology: Making the Strange Familiar
http://ivanasociology.blogspot.com/2013/08/making-strange-familiar.html
Monday, August 12, 2013. Making the Strange Familiar. Hi, my name is Ivana Ly! I am a freshman in FSSP. I am coming into the University of California, Santa Barbara as a pre-Economics/Accounting major. Things are the way they are; why and how what we do in our society is normal, but weird in other societies. Is it because as college students, we've outgrown the notion that dressing in swag is cool? Is it because we're just too busy studying to worry about how we look to others? August 13, 2013 at 5:03 PM.

A Few Words.: September 2013
http://spaceodysseys.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 13, 2013. What if it's learned by observing others? Maybe the media helps perpetuate not only the manner but the gender role for men to be the ones opening doors for women. The perspective that using the sociological imagination provides has made it so I'm always questioning who's really responsible for the way things are in society. It's opened my eyes to the many hidden privileges that various groups of people have and to the efforts that can be put to changing that. Through hegemonic...

A Few Words.: Breadwinner Moms
http://spaceodysseys.blogspot.com/2013/09/breadwinner-moms.html
Sunday, September 8, 2013. If I were given the opportunity to ask these families questions, I'd ask them how it's affected their children's perspective of gender roles. How do they want their children's families to be? September 9, 2013 at 11:36 PM. I feel that Egan and Zanes perspectives on gender norms will be significantly different once they start to notice how their family is quite different from that of their peers. Maybe they will be against, proud of, or even apathetic about it.

A Few Words.: O Christmas Tree
http://spaceodysseys.blogspot.com/2013/08/o-christmas-tree.html
Sunday, August 18, 2013. Pictured: A dirty tree in the corner of my living room back home during Christmas 2011]. Aspects of the Christmas tree, though, aren't strictly limited to material ones. Somewhere out there at some point in December, a kid walks into their living room, sees the Christmas tree for the first time (if his parents aren't cool enough to let him help set it up), and is instantly affected by it. How, you might ask? August 19, 2013 at 10:01 PM. August 22, 2013 at 8:41 AM. I feel like it ...

Kelly's Sociology Blog: September 2013
http://kellybsocblog.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 13, 2013. I still view the sociological imagination the same way as I did in the beginning of the course. It is the process of questioning why we do certain things and how we have been taught to act in certain ways. But now I am able to apply it to more and more aspects of our lives. However, the question that I am still pondering is why pink and blue? Sunday, September 8, 2013. Shift in family dynamics. Sunday, September 1, 2013. It’s so amazing how people pre-judge others before...

Friday, September 13, 2013. Sunday, September 8, 2013. The Other Way Around. If I had the opportunity, I would ask these families questions about how they came to be able to accept the reversed societal roles because they are going against society's traditions. How did they react when people judged them for having reversed familial roles? Will they continue to live like this, or is it temporary? Sunday, September 1, 2013. I Used to be a "Tomboy".
