Different from any other planet, Earth is 70 percent covered in oceans. Our atmosphere is made of 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen, and 1 percent other ingredients.

Jupiter has 68 known moons. Its four largest moons are named the Galilean moons, after Galileo Galilei. Galileo first observed these moons in 1610. Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto are very different worlds. Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto are the mythological lovers of Zeus, the Greek counterpart to the Roman god, Jupiter. Located between Mars and Jupiter, numerous irregular asteroids orbit the sun. These rocky worlds range in size from 1 km in diameter to dwarf planet Ceres, which is 950 km in diameter. There is an estimate of 1.1 to 1.9 million asteroids that are larger than 1 km (0.6 mile) inside the Asteroid Belt. There are millions more smaller than 1 km. This personal project explored the planets, moons and other bodies orbiting our sun. I wanted to teach kids the solar system through 22 original illustrations and some fun facts. Our Solar System involved branding, a web site, illustration, and a social media campaign. View Our Solar System. For the home page, I used the overview of the solar system as the navigation. Users could also expand certain labels to learn key terms of the solar system.

These inner planets have rocky, solid surfaces. Dwarf planets orbit the sun and are smaller than planets. A planet’s gravity has either pulled or pushed smaller bodies that have crossed its orbit. This is called clearing the neighborhood around its orbit. Dwarf planets have weaker gravity and have not cleared their neighborhood. These large planets have thick atmospheres made of gases. They do not have solid surfaces. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune all have rings and numerous moons.
