solasachanalba: October 2014

http://solasachanalba.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, 5 October 2014. Very far behind in my blog so I'll do a brief synopsis of what we've been up to. In early July we met up with my brother and and his family in Bruges, Belgium, for a few days. Love Bruge! Mid-August to mid-September we spent in Michigan visiting my family. Various photos - Summer 2014 - Michigan. The day after we returned home from Michigan we voted on the Scottish independence referendum. Then visited daughter, Doreen, on the Isle of Iona with our friends Susanna and Mick. Scotti...

solasachanalba: December 2014

http://solasachanalba.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Saturday, 20 December 2014. It's very strange to see christmas decorations here - everywhere! Christmas songs (non-religious) are playing on the streets, in stores, etc. This is a Buddhist country so there are few christians. I thought at first it was for the tourists and expats here, but now I think the Thais just like to celebrate anything - non-religious xmas of course. The stores are packed with christmas gifts and decorations. We love the food here! A couple of tofu dishes at our favourite restaurant.

Saturday, 19 April 2014. Ugandan daughter, Doreen, is on the Isle of Iona as a staff member this year and she loves it! We will spend a couple of nights there with her in May, then she'll have a week off to spend with us. Still deciding where to go. Took a short trip in March to Edinburgh then to Inverness to see grandson. Recently read books that I recommend:. Michelle Wan Orchid series - mysteries in Dordogne. The Tree of Hands - Ruth Rendell. http://solasachanalba.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, 5 May 2013. When she visited us in 2010 she went on a retreat for a week here: Iona Community. She loved it and late last year she applied to be a volunteer there. She was accepted and based on the fact that she had already visited the UK and returned to Uganda, was granted a visa to volunteer on Iona. She will be there for 14 weeks. Her visa allows her to be in the UK as a visitor for two weeks prior and two weeks after her stint on Iona. We went for a walk in Benmore Botanic Gardens Saturday:.

Danny and Annie @ VSO. Monday, 12 January 2009. Tips on settling in for volunteers outside of Kampala. These are tips only for volunteers outside of Kampala since Kampala is a totally different world from the rest of Uganda - plenty of shopping malls, etc. Our house had a table, 2 wooden chairs, 2 single beds with mattresses and a toilet brush. No dishes, nothing to clean with, no basins for doing laundry, no clothesline, no sheets, blankets, etc. It took many months to fully furnish our house. Jerry can...
