It’s not that scary… honest. Friday, 28th September, 2007. Due to my laziness as a blogger (and due to me moving house today) again I’m bringing you a blog post that I made a few months ago in my old blog because I thought it was worth a mention. It isn’t a particularly mathematical blog, more of a historical and symmetrical blog, but I still thought it was worth a mention as it’s one of my favourite places in England. Below are some shots I took of various bits on the building. And The Heritage Trail.

21 de abril de 2015. If 1 x is 1, how much is 1-x? 9658; Versión en Español. The title should be "if (= ( 1 x) 1), how much is (- 1 x)? Mathematically, if we had infinite precision, x is 0, 1-x is 1, and we have finished. But if we do the calculations with floating point numbers everything is more complicated. First, if x is not 0 but very small, the result of 1 x and 1-x are also 1. Almost all modern computers use the IEEE standard. The toy version uses:. As all of this is in binary, so we use. If we no...

It’s not that scary… honest. Mathematics and Juggling →. Book review: “Fermat’s Last Theorem” by Simon Singh. Thursday, 3rd May, 2007. Before I become mathematicalised (it’s a bit like being radicalised but with more maths), I had very little knowledge of what lay beyond the scope of my school work. I was unfortunate enough to have a set of teachers who weren’t really interested in pushing me and told me I’d never be good at mathematics. This entry was posted in Books. It’s not that scary… honest. The Mathematical Atlas →. Wednesday, 19th September, 2007. I originally posted about this over a year ago on my old blog, but I thought I’d slowly transfer over some of the material as I’m a bit lazy (plus there are some real gems on there). The first up for transfer is a short bit about Persi Diaconis, a very interesting Mathemagician, excuse the “Good Will Hunting” reference. Also, he showed that if you do 7 riffle-shuffles to an ordinary pack of cards that’s enough t...

It’s not that scary… honest. This is the list of topical mathematics books I’ve read. They’re all a good read and the majority contain very little hard mathematics:. 8220; Fermat’s Last Theorem” by Simon Singh. This book traces the history of one of the most famous problems of all time; Fermat’s Last Theorem. 8220;A Mathematician’s Apology” by G.H. Hardy. 8220;The Man Who Loved Only Numbers” by Paul Hoffman. 8220;Adventures in Group Theory” by David Joyner. On Normal service should res…. On Book review: ...
