A few thoughts on SEN. The legacy of invisibility. Rumsfeld, Consistency and Behaviour Management →. Funding for young people with SEN: A few brief thoughts. This is a very brief consideration of the ‘Research on funding for young people with special educational needs’ (DfE July 2015). So here are some hurried thoughts which may or may not be amended at a later date:. The acknowledgement that funding should reflect the current need rather than historic funding levels is gratefully received. This is a...

A few thoughts on SEN. Is accreditation serving its purpose? We really need to work together →. Thoughts on lesson observations #6 Subject leader without portfolio. As a Special school we organise our approach to lesson observation on fairly traditional lines. They are generally conducted by the Senior Leadership Team and Subject Leaders, with a focus on staff appraisal and the monitoring of subject based learning, supplemented with peer to peer observations for particular purposes. Is accreditation serv...

A few thoughts on SEN. The Progressive Traditionalism of Special Education. I am aware that the very nature of what is Traditional or Progressive is part of the debate. So for arguments sake I have borrowed definitions and comparative statements from Tom Sherrington’s excellent blog The Progressive-Traditional Pedagogy Tree . Leaning towards an emphasis on content, structures, ordered systems, formal learning, measurable outcomes. As a school we have two distinct curricula, one for pupils up to the age o...

The statistic that 65% of people with a learning disability would like to work (Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities 2011), but less than 7% have that opportunity (Department of Health 2014) is quite shocking and an indictment on the very nature of our society. 2 thoughts on “ Is accreditation serving its purpose? A few thoughts on SEN. The things we do to be more inclusive. Every so often the opinion pops up in my Twitter feed that Special schools should be abolished. It seems to me a bit like trying to eradicate poverty by abolishing food banks. Whilst Special schools may be indicative of a system which is not completely inclusive, I don’t think they are the cause, they are of course also indicative of a system within which choice exists. A few thoughts on SEN. As part of a panel at the London Festival of Education I had the opportunity to discuss the nature of transition beyond special schools for young people with special educational needs and disabilities. This addressed not just the pragmatics of a person with complex and highly individualised needs moving from one education setting to another, but also the broader issues around the opportunities available beyond education. Time to think by Simon Knight. I think we need a bit more Grey.

A few thoughts on SEN. Thoughts on lesson observations #6 Subject leader without portfolio. The legacy of invisibility →. We really need to work together.
