Somalia Food Security Trust. VISION OF A RICH AND FERTILE SOMALIA. A steady monthly salary for workers is important to get best possible yield per Ha. The supervisors are responsible for registration of the farmer’s labour force. SFST and the supervisors settle the salaries for each specific farm work together, based on pervious year net revenue for the cooperative cluster. All workers will get a bonus if targeted production is fulfilled and exceeded.

Somalia Food Security Trust. VISION OF A RICH AND FERTILE SOMALIA. The cooperatives will be sorted into ten clusters of 7,500 Ha land corresponding to an average of 700-800 farmers of each cluster. A total amount of 8 MUSD is needed as a loan for investments, start up expenses, land preparation, planting and cultivation per cluster. The Loan will be paid back over five years and then be reinvested into food processing and infrastructure. The development process for each cluster is planned as follows:.

Somalia Food Security Trust. VISION OF A RICH AND FERTILE SOMALIA. Certified seed improves yield 2-3 times. Most of the farmers do not have access to high quality seed. While there are many farmers, who out of ignorance, do not know the benefits certified seed, others have become disillusioned from the effects of provision of poor quality seed choosing to grow their own saved seed. Initially, certified seed will be imported from Kenya and Ethiopia.

Somalia Food Security Trust. VISION OF A RICH AND FERTILE SOMALIA. Potato is a valuable cash crop for both domestic consumption and export. Export price is about 400-450 USD/t for good quality. However usually farmers can’t afford potato as a crop since it requires high pre harvest cost for chemicals, cultivation and certified seed potato. Generally the pre harvest cost is about 4600 USD and another 1400 for post harvest cost per Ha. The normal yield with irrigation and certified seed is 30-40t/ha.

Each cooperative chose ten represent supervisors - farmers that will be trained by SFST agro experts in Kenya, Ethiopia or locally at the SFST centre. The Education will take 6 months. Each supervisor will be responsible to educate another ten farmers as assistants. Use of irrigation and chemicals. Crop management for each kind of crop. Land preparation for each crop. Land cultivation for each crop. Planting of each crop.
