Some Math: Quadratic residue method for finding large primes
http://somemath.blogspot.com/2007/06/quadratic-residue-method-for-finding.html
For people who love numbers. Wednesday, June 20, 2007. Quadratic residue method for finding large primes. The idea is to get quadratic residues modulo some non-square and iterate up with them in the search for ever larger primes. Start with, say 29 and let 17 be the non-square. 17 = 824 = 8*103. And 103 is prime, so now you use 103. 17 = 32*331, giving you 331, and now I'm wondering why I picked 17. It's maybe quicker to just use n. Hmmmlet me do one more iteration, so 331. Next would be 13693. The word ...
Some Math: August 2015
http://somemath.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
For people who love numbers. Sunday, August 30, 2015. Actual value of recognition. To some extent the way attention works for something you find is easy- other people learn of it and use it. The more people who learn of it and use it, the more influence some thing you found can have. The web facilitates referral. Am confident that most of my influence from my mathematical discovery happens because someone needs the mathematics. Links to this post. Labels: behind the scenes. Sunday, August 23, 2015. Mathe...
Some Math: Binary Quadratic Diophantine Iterator
http://somemath.blogspot.com/2014/11/binary-quadratic-diophantine-iterator.html
For people who love numbers. Friday, November 28, 2014. Binary Quadratic Diophantine Iterator. It must be that if you have:. Then it must also be true that. In general true binary quadratics, except for the cases D = 0 or D = -1, F = 0, are connected to an infinity of others, as all can be reduced. To this form, so it's what I like to call an infinity result. By true binary quadratic I mean one that does not have a form like this example:. Notice -2Duv cancels out 2Duv, and then it's just a matter of gro...
Some Math: Infinity and binary quadratic Diophantine equations
http://somemath.blogspot.com/2015/08/infinity-and-binary-quadratic.html
For people who love numbers. Tuesday, August 11, 2015. Infinity and binary quadratic Diophantine equations. Possibility is amazing. How do we know what we don't know? But we can have clues from what things people find that are very surprising. Like one of my discoveries years ago was proof that binary quadratic Diophantine equations are in general connected to an infinity of binary quadratic Diophantine equations where my discovery relies on using an identity. It being unnecessary to me is really cool!
Some Math: Differential equation and prime counting
http://somemath.blogspot.com/2012/11/differential-equation-and-prime-counting.html
For people who love numbers. Saturday, November 03, 2012. Differential equation and prime counting. A bit over a decade ago in the summer of 2002 I found a difference equation which can be constrained to count prime numbers. The derivation is remarkably simple requiring only very elementary techniques, but weirdly enough leads to this difference equation which in turn leads to a partial differential equation. The count at each composite is given by:. 1 - (j-1) - S(x/p. The form of the Δ. X] - S(x,p.

For people who love numbers. Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Remarkably, over two decades ago. Of course reality can be tough as you see yourself fail a lot. And you can't have an ego about it, as often you look really silly. My guess is that one of the deep terrors of many mathematicians is looking stupid! But if my guess is correct that meant that those Usenet people in attacking my ideas may have felt I was the one who looked stupid, so they'd point out errors to show. Day after day for years. As for the ...

Some Sort of Mathematics. A blog about mathematics, teaching and all that lies betwixt. Tuesday, 7 February 2012. Mathematics Counts: The Cockcroft Report (1982). I've just found that the entire text of this report can be found here. It may well be 30 years old but it seems as fresh and relevant as ever. I thought I would reproduce paragraph 243 below to make it even easier to find it:. 243 Mathematics teaching at all levels should include opportunities for. Exposition by the teacher;.
