Someone Else's Eye

Thursday, July 16, 2015. Can you pass the pronoun test? Thanks to whoever is behind the blog "One Hot Mess" for inventing my new favorite game. Take any story about a successful woman, and swap out the pronouns. Does it sound ridiculous? You've discovered gender bias, hiding in plain sight. The genius behind "One Hot Mess" treats us to a New York Times. Story about Wimbledon champ Serena Williams, rewritten as if it were about Super Bowl champ Tom Brady. Wednesday, February 11, 2015. Someone Else's Eye: November 2014

http://someoneelseseye.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 17, 2014. David Ritz wrote one of the best celebrity memoirs out there - Ray Charles' book Brother Ray. Read it and you'll feel like you're having a conversation with Ray himself. Brother Ray. Spawned other works as well: both the Ray Charles biopic. That won Jamie Foxx his Oscar and a less well-known show. By one of my favorite cabaret singers. Calls it "An honest and genuinely respectful portrait of a true diva by a writer who feels the power of her art." Aretha Franklin calls it.

Someone Else's Eye: November 2011

http://someoneelseseye.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 17, 2011. The Elmer Fudd Rule. Are you thinking of distinguishing your firm by trademarking a new word? It's a tempting path - or should I say "iPath"? But for every neologism that breaks through to become part of the collective consciousness, there are thousands of clunky, derivative attempts that fall far short of the mark. If yours falls into the latter category, you'll distinguish your firm alright, but for all the wrong reasons. A hunter. Likewise, we all use words daily, but ...

Someone Else's Eye: Challenged

http://someoneelseseye.blogspot.com/2015/01/challenged.html

Sunday, January 25, 2015. So here we are, the last day of the Your Turn Challenge. What have I learned? I can in fact blog for seven days in a row if I choose to. No surprise there, actually. The surprise happened back on day 4. When I articulated the difference between shipping for my clients (no problem, do it all the time) and shipping for myself. I learned I have to treat myself like a client. That my work has to be as important to me as my clients' work is. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). In 200...

Someone Else's Eye: October 2014

http://someoneelseseye.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 9, 2014. When's the last time you washed your hands in a bathroom sink without looking up to check your appearance in the mirror? I'll tell you when: Never. Don't be ashamed. It's just a reflex. But this was not just any family. Photograph. It was a photograph of her grandfather in medical school, circa 1890. Grandpa and his classmates in shirtsleeves, vests, and the occasional jaunty hat, gathered around a long table, earnestly examining a corpse. Whether it's a memento mori. I'm not l...

Someone Else's Eye: February 2014

http://someoneelseseye.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 21, 2014. I recently found myself listening to a discussion about music. One young woman mentioned a song about a "Vietnamese coachman" and I thought, I listened to the same CD she did. How did I miss that one? Later she spoke of the lilting phrases of the "Vietnamese waltz" and I realized she meant "Viennese.". I looked around the room - there were about a dozen other people there, all whip-smart college students, and they noticed her verbal misstep as well. But. No one corrected her.

Tell me more | Laura Scala's Blog

https://lgsservices.wordpress.com/2010/06/17/tell-me-more

Laura Scala's Blog. Mirror Mirroroh what have I learned. On: June 17, 2010. During class yesterday, we learned a trick to help simmer down a potentially hostile audience member in a training session. The idea is to remain calm and in control and allow the person to vent out all of their frustration. The person challenging you as the trainer is gearing up for a fight and if you don’t get emotionally charged at them….the situation tends to fizzles out. 2 Responses to "Tell me more". Sentenced to a mandatory training…oh no now what??!! | Laura Scala's Blog

Laura Scala's Blog. Mirror Mirroroh what have I learned. Are you a life long Learner? Sentenced to a mandatory training…oh no now what? On: June 9, 2010. It was such a delight to see a lot of folks comment on the last blog entry and state that they are life long learners. That made me feel great to be surrounded by people who love to learn and are planning to live their life that way. It is certainly a state of mind and desire and one that I find very rewarding. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

A critical question. | Front Range Trainer's Blog

Front Range Trainer's Blog. Thinking Progressively About Adult Learning. Laquo; This is critical! As a learner, I usually need to understand the rationale behind a task before I wholeheartedly embrace it. I consider myself a skeptic. I’ve often felt that the word ‘skeptic’ had a negative connotation attached to it. I’ve come to realize that my skepticism is just another way to describe my analytical nature and my tendency for thinking critically. Who will benefit from its data? Fundamentals of Training 1.

Front Range Trainer's Blog. Thinking Progressively About Adult Learning. Laquo; Learning to snowboard . . . again! I’ve been reading this book,. By Merriam et al., and things have been moving along pretty smoothly. Nothing really jumping out at me, . . . . UNTIL! I get to a heading called CRITICAL THEORY AND ADULT LEARNING. I read about seven “learning tasks” that comprise one of Brookfield’s learning theories. Check this out. This is how it goes:. Is this a tall order or what? Here’s my question:. You a...

Front Range Trainer's Blog. Thinking Progressively About Adult Learning. Learning to snowboard . . . again! I made a conscious effort to observe riders that displayed good form and I would ask fellow riders I met on the ski lift about what they knew of technique. In retrospect I think I did pretty well. I didn’t once get injured and I believe that I improved as a rider. In anticipation for next season, I have signed up for the special lessons package already. Explore posts in the same categories:. Singing Someone Else's Blues

Singing Someone Else's Blues. It's just a blog. Monday, March 24, 2008. Another year. The annual blog wrap up is coming soon. I'm about to start going nuts with the writing. I want Lately David to start recording again, and I'm going to keep a journal of the process. I do not expect anyone to read it, but at least it will generate fodder for blog posts more than once per year. Posted by Dann Gold at 4:52 PM. Thursday, April 05, 2007. I found my blog, but where'd my year go? Posted by Dann Gold at 6:08 PM.
