As I was browsing the beer shelves at the bottle shop, I had two criteria for what was to be my first 6-pack purchase of 2012:. It had to have something more than pale fizziness going for it. It had to be something, I hadn’t tried before. I finally chose something I wasn’t even aware of, a craft beer from Nelson, New Zealand. It was a good choice. I think we might have a new favourite! Domestic, a mid strength bitter, relatively inexpensive, and can last in the fridge untouched for an inordinate amount of time. The simple joys of hops, malt and barley. Lord Nelson’s Old Admiral (Australia, NSW) 6.1%. Now this is more like it…. From the Lord Nelson Brewery in Sydney, Old Admiral wears its boutique credentials on its sleeve, or rather on its label. “100% Natural Ale” it boasts, followed by “Australian Craft Brewed”. Any further stretch for authenticity and it would be sold in wooden cask bottles. It’s a fine tasting, naturally made beer from a non-multinational brewery. What’s not to like?
