Some thoughts about...: The Great Climate Change Debate

http://somethoughtsabout.blogspot.com/2009/02/great-climate-change-debate.html

Friday, February 27, 2009. The Great Climate Change Debate. So, perhaps the solution is for all of us to take university courses in climatology and then reserve our judgements until we reach at least doctoral level and are able to examine – and understand – the evidence on our own. Alternatively, we could use basic critical reasoning skills, combined with whatever information and understanding is available to us now. A If human activity causes climate change. B If human activity doesn't. Thus, even if cl...

Some thoughts about...: Thoughts and questions from some old notebooks: Faith

http://somethoughtsabout.blogspot.com/2008/02/thoughts-and-questions-from-some-old_03.html

Sunday, February 3, 2008. Thoughts and questions from some old notebooks: Faith. To believe something requires more than evidence and the weighing up of evidence; it requires a leap of faith. As St Augustine wrote: "Understanding is the reward of faith. Therefore, seek not to understand that you may believe, but believe that you may understand." ( On the gospel of St John XXIX. The things that really matter are all one thing. There are at least two kind of desire. Is truer than literal fact. If the past ...

Some thoughts about...: August 2007

http://somethoughtsabout.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 16, 2007. Do we make decisions based on reason or emotion? My best description of how reason and emotion work within. Is an image of an ever-widening spiral:. As the spiral widens, my sense of 'certainty' increases. We can find peace with God only when we are 'broken'. Again, although I didn't say it in the meeting, I've been thinking about this some more. I imagine myself going for a job interview at God Inc.:. God: So, what strengths can you bring to the company? Links to this post.

Some thoughts about...: An argument for the existence of 'the soul'

http://somethoughtsabout.blogspot.com/2008/02/argument-for-existence-of-soul.html

Sunday, February 3, 2008. An argument for the existence of 'the soul'. By "soul", I mean something beyond the body that is nevertheless an essential part of "me". I will use the method Reductio ad absurdum. Latin: "reduction to the absurd"), where I assume the opposite. Of what I am trying to prove, hoping to derive an absurd outcome, and then conclude that the original assumption must have been false. I am merely an organised collection of material "stuff" (atoms, molecules, cells, .). Thoughts and ques...

Museums, multimedia and the web - with an emphasis on art museums. Trying to sell a bad interface. In our local newspaper the other day I saw an advertisement for a new website created to support the NSW Central Coast’s waste collection and recycling system. (Click the image to see it.) Surely, seeing all. The Web ...

Doctor Dada: Collections on websites: Are museums getting less committed?

http://doctordada.blogspot.com/2010/12/collections-on-websites-are-museums.html

Museums, multimedia and the web - with an emphasis on art museums. Collections on websites: Are museums getting less committed? Recently, there was some discussion on the museum-ed. Discussion list, that began with this message:. If this is indeed the trend, we are curious about the thinking behind it. Is it a question of overhead and web maintenance cost? Does this reflect a change in philosophy about the role of a website for a museum / a museum for its culture? We are, as I said, curious. Thanks.

Museums, multimedia and the web - with an emphasis on art museums. Art and the voodoo paradox. Roy de Maistre, 'Rhythmic composition in yellow green minor' 1919. Someone looks at an abstract painting. What does he or she ask? Probably "What is it? Or "What does it mean? The answer, "It’s only a picture, only a surface covered with paint," will in no way satisfy. 1 Find a picture of a face in an old magazine, preferably a face of someone famous. 2 Take a pencil (or pen). Short presentation by Tom Tullis, on an eye-tracking study which looks at use of faces on web pages. Apparently, users tend to be drawn to faces when browsing. But the more task-driven. Monday, October 5, 2009. It was also amazing in other ways, though. I mentioned in a previous post that there are a few select things in this world that bring people of different backgrounds and different personalities together. Well, as it turns out, Pearl Jam is one of them. Monday, September 21, 2009. Rare acts of kindness. Today while I was at work I saw something that has unfortunately become rare in our world. As I was talking to her, I looked up a few times to see if my coworker could lend some as...

Some Thoughts On...

Monday, July 18, 2016. Listening to the Other Side. Like so many others, I read and watched what happened in four separate tragedies across our country the last two weeks. In short, ten innocent people were killed, seemingly without provocation. The horrific events in Louisiana, Minnesota, Dallas, and Louisiana again only reiterated the fact, at least to me, that our country is listing badly in churning seas. Strange as it may sound, these tragedies made me think of teenage drivers and their parents.

Saturday, 16 April 2016. Review: A Room of One's Own (The Williamson Art Gallery and Museum, Birkenhead). This small, unexpectedly powerful exhibition of works, mostly paintings, from the Williamson’s collection draws its title from an essay by Virginia Woolf. I have encountered a lot of troubles regarding IC Consequences", as observer or as someone involved. A number of the troubles involving them seems to come from a lack of tolerance, a desire to force one's own view of what consequences should be taken on others by mixing IC and OOC, and a lack of flexibility.
