Word's Apart: June 2008
http://achbaronet.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 16, 2008. Can you turn on the Dude? Contrary to what you might be thinking, this question is not referring to my skills in picking up a cowboy. (although the new dress I bought might do the trick…). This is a question, however, that my roommate and I exchange with each other almost on a daily basis, usually in the evening. Dude, get it? For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about, I am referring to the phenomenon of the hot water heater in Israel. תוכלי להדליק את הדוד? Topsy Be...

Tuesday, August 19, 2008. The Jews of Yemen. Operation Magic Carpet: Yemenites coming to Israel. Ie carrying the Jews of Yemen to me. It's a good thing, because the Yemenites (also known here as Temanim) have enriched Israeli society in two special ways: Ishay Levy and Tzion Baruch. Thus far, Temanim have been surprisingly absent from my blog, which is strange given my slightly unhealthy obsession with them. I will now pay tribute to my two favorites. I don't understand how I fell for you, young one.

Word's Apart: July 2008
http://achbaronet.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Thursday, July 31, 2008. Every morning, when I leave my building for work, I am greeted downstairs by the security guard at the bank next to my apartment. Trustily he has been there since I moved into my apartment over a year ago. This morning, after his hearty "good morning," he blurts out, "as of Sunday, I'm being transferred to another branch! I bade him farewell and hurried on my way, with a little sadness that my morning friend won't be there next week. It is truly the end of an era. I had two days ...

Thursday, September 22, 2011. I should do this every night. I thought to myself. Or maybe I said it aloud. Because after my few quiet minutes, I was disturbed by not one, but three Israelis for the next 30 minutes, and I was reminded why I do. Do this every night. 8221; I politely declined. He politely continued, “Why not? 8221; To which I looked down at my work clothes and purse and responded, “I don’t have a bathing suit.” “I’ll get you one.”. Do you speak English? I just wanted to tell you that you ha...

Word's Apart: Daylight Savings
http://achbaronet.blogspot.com/2009/03/daylight-savings.html
Monday, March 30, 2009. It's springtime again, and last Thursday night/early Friday morning, we lost an hour of sleep. My friend Danny had a flight abroad at 4 am, and while we were eating dinner with his parents they asked, "the old 4 am or the new 4 am? To which we proceeded to discuss his trip to the airport. "Don't worry," he assured us, "I ordered a taxi for 2 am.". After thinking about this for a moment, we all realized that 2 am did not exist! Good call. :). March 30, 2009 at 1:26 PM.

Word's Apart: Can You Train your Owner?
http://achbaronet.blogspot.com/2008/08/can-you-train-your-owner.html
Sunday, August 3, 2008. Can You Train your Owner? Are you kidding me? I take the lord's name in vain, and glare at the woman holding the leash. She managed to pull her dog away so that my bicycle wheel did not become too yellow, and smirks "sorry". Not satisfied with her half-pathetic apology, I ask "how can you let your dog PEE on my bike? I mean, she's got him on a LEASH, she can clearly control where he is going. She just kept walking. Really,. Please eat yellow snow. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Thursday, August 26, 2010. So far, so good. That was 15 days ago. I called politely at the beginning of the week (Sunday), just to check on the status. I was told that it would arrive at the latest on Tuesday. Well, on Wednesday, I decided I would need to go "Israeli" to actually receive my couch. What is "going Israeli"? To which the answer was, "no, but it's the only way go get something done in this country." Lie. Deceive. Manipulate. Complain. Stretch the Truth. Be Israeli. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
