The O’Connell’s Queensland Adventure 2008. A weblog for the O’Connell’s QLD trip in 2008. September 29, 2008. We got rattled by the Gulflander at Normanton. The dirt road into Lawn Hill was a challenge so we left the van at the free campsite for a few nights. We got 1 flat tyre and 2 windscreen chips. THe campsite where we set up our tents was barren with little shade and dirt ground. It topped 39 degrees at one point in the day! Winton, Longreach, Blackhall and Charleville. After the rain finally stopped in Hervey Bay we took off and stayed a few nights at 1770 and then a night at Lake Awoonga. This is supposed to be a lake full of barramundi but of course they only bite when the weather is hot. Needless to say we caught none in July! Sav enjoying the Art Gallery at Carnarvon Gorge. Hiking in Carnarvon Gorge - the best kids walk ever!

We stayed over at a free camp on the Mary River which was a nice place but the guy who rolled up to fish all night with his car speakers on was not Mr Popular with the campers! We also drove the Bloomfield Track and got to see our first croc – a salty of about 4 metres! Dora and Cinderella go Jungle Surfing for Sophs birthday. Snorkelling on the reef. Not a nice experience. The next cassowary we saw walked right past our van at CApe Trib. Needless to say Sav and I got goose bumps but this bird was a nice one. Snakes alive in Cape York! Cobbold Gorge. an amazing place.
