St Mary’s Glacier—ice ax training. November 12, 2005. Last night, but up to the Glacier we go anyway, ice axes lashed to our packs, helmets in tow. The lower part of the trail is a wind tunnel, and gusts of blown snow make us stop and turn away, backs to the wind. It is a test of all our fleece and gore-tex and down, and the little chemical handwarmers in my gloves are comforting. Keep working it, keep fighting—someday your life may depend on it.
