Sunday, 11 January 2015. Week 3: INDIA - Kochi → Allepey → Kollam → Madurai. Image of the week: sunset in Madurai (more images at end of post). Where in the world. Two nights in Kochi. An hour taxi journey further south to Allepey where we spent one night in a B&B before embarking on a houseboat for one night. The boat took us down to Kollam where we stayed for two nights. We then took our first overnight train to Madurai in the state of Tamil Nadu, where we stayed for one night. The banks are dotted wit...

Renting barges in Amsterdam and beyond…. Paris – Bateau Simpatico. Ha Long Bay – Vietnam. I see a lot of queries on travel forums asking about what it’s like to rent a houseboat or barge in Amsterdam. I’ve stayed on four of them, and I’m off to try a beautiful-looking barge in Paris in May. I live on a Dutch barge on the Thames and have a particular fondness for them. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Renting barges in Amsterdam and beyond…. Paris – Bateau Simpatico. Ha Long Bay – Vietnam. St Nicolaas boat tour:. If the weather’s nice you can sign up for the St. Nicolaas boat tour at Boom Chicago on Liedseplein. These are small open-top boats run by volunteers. If the weather’s crap take one of the glass roofed bateau-mouche-type tourist boats from outside Centraal Station. It’s well worth seeing Amsterdam from water-level. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Renting barges in Amsterdam and beyond…. Paris – Bateau Simpatico. Ha Long Bay – Vietnam. Paris – Bateau Simpatico. Is a luxuriously appointed Dutch barge moored in what must be the best location in Paris: in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, alongside le Pont de Bir-Hakeim. I was excited to be staying aboard her in May this year and I’m glad to say that Simpatico exceeded my expectations. Thanks to Captain Bob for allowing me to use his photos of Simpatico on this site. Renting barges in Amsterdam and beyond…. Paris – Bateau Simpatico. Ha Long Bay – Vietnam. Ha Long Bay – Vietnam. In 2001 I spent two weeks travelling through Vietnam. The undisputed highlight of the trip was a two day boat journey through Ha Long Bay with Handspan Travel. Back then they had a small wooden trip boat that fitted about a dozen people in small cabins. The food was astoundingly good, the company amenable and the scenery simply stunning. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here.

Renting barges in Amsterdam and beyond…. Paris – Bateau Simpatico. Ha Long Bay – Vietnam. I’m afraid I don’t tend to buy much in the way of tulip bulbs, diamonds, bicycles etc. when I’m in Amsterdam so this section may not be much use to anyone who doesn’t love beer and cheese. Also on Haarlemmerstraat, this little artisan bakery is part of a chain, but none the worse for that. Their seeded rye breads are excellent, and their sandwiches are probably the best in town, although rather expensive for the...

Renting barges in Amsterdam and beyond…. Paris – Bateau Simpatico. Ha Long Bay – Vietnam. I booked Irene Swier’s houseboat. For Queen’s Day weekend at the end of April 2010. I chose the boat because it is on the Prinsengracht and has a balcony, so we would be ideally placed to enjoy the madness that occurs on the canals during Amsterdam’s biggest annual party. The possibilities for eating and drinking in the western canal belt are pretty much endless. For a full list of what’s available I would recom...

Renting barges in Amsterdam and beyond…. Paris – Bateau Simpatico. Ha Long Bay – Vietnam. Houseboat and barge rental has become immensely popular in Amsterdam in recent years. There are a number of websites offering boats to stay on (see the links on the right). Almost all of these boats are static, so you are renting a floating apartment rather than a habitable mode of transport. The boats reviewed in this section are:. The Magere Brug Houseboat. Renting barges in Amsterdam and beyond…. Paris – Bateau Simpatico. Ha Long Bay – Vietnam. Have you ever tried Surinamese food? One of Amsterdam’s finest fish restaurants, Bridges is a very swish, modern and rather expensive restaurant in an excellent location on Oudezijds Voorburgwal. Ideal for a special occasion, the fish here is superb as you’d expect, but it’s definitely not a place to go if you are watching your pennies. You definitely need to book this one well in advance.
