Family history research in the Southern States. Civil War Prisoner of War Records. Desertion was a big problem for the military during the Civil War. The long, bloody war was hard on both the soldiers and their families. It made me think of what the conditions were like that may have prompted Robert to leave his unit. I have other Civil War ancestors who were POWs. I’m planning on taking some more time with this database to see if I can learn more about them. May 5, 2011. Robert Baker Family History.

Family History Research, Lecturing and Related Services. Census Records Tell a Story. April 20, 2011. One good source for learning more about your Civil War-era ancestors is census records. They are easy to find, easy to use and a basic source used by most researchers. By comparing the information in the 1860 and 1870 U.S. censuses you can get a picture of your family before and after the war, giving you an idea of how the war affected this family. How would the loss of those slaves affect the family?

Family History Research, Lecturing and Related Services. Tech Tuesday – 1940 U.S. Census. April 3, 2012. The 1940 census is now available for indexing at FamilySearch Indexing. I indexed my first batch last night. It was from the state of Colorado and it was easy to read. There are fewer fields to index than the 1930 census and it went pretty quickly. March 22, 2014. Life in Louisiana is great in some ways but in others, I wish we'd never left Washington. I can't help but feel really jealous of other families I know who got exciting assignments over seas and in sunny Hawaii while we're stuck here fighting off the masses of mosquitoes and daily visitors like this guy. Yes that is a an ugly, veiny I'm so grossed out bat! Which did remind me to update every ones shots ;). I'm working on getting her into a toddler program on post though, but with SO MANY ...

Southern roots and cowboy boots. Tuesday, April 23, 2013. Where we've been and where we're going. You know those rides at amusement parks that spin 'round and 'round with loud music booming and everyone is yelling and screaming a mixture of excitement and fear? Well that's where we've been lately, on that ride.. We have a growing-like-a-weed almost 11 month old. If it's on the floor, he eats it. If it's on a table, he knocks it down. If it's a door, he opens it. You get the picture. As hard as that day ...

Southern Roots and Northern Blossoms. Bloom where you're planted. The “Wilds” of Wisconsin. August 12, 2015. Grandpa Ott morning glories growing on the trellis right off the patio out back. Queen Ann’s lace blankets the roadways here this time of year in advance of the goldenrod that bursts forth from fields and ditches. Along the way Stella and I pass the river and enjoy the eagles, deer, and sand hill cranes we see along the way. I never want for beauty when I’m here. Just another day in Wisconsin.
