Notes on Basotho Culture – Southern Secrets Hiking
https://southernsecretshiking.wordpress.com/notes-on-basotho-culture
Notes on Basotho Culture. Notes on Basotho Culture. Christeen and I have been taking South Africans and overseas visitors on day and multi-day trips to Lesotho as mountain guides, for more than five years, sometimes two or three times a week. We trust these notes will go some way to fostering more positive and tolerant attitudes, and avoid potential confrontation from misunderstandings and suspicion, caused by a difficulty in language communication and possible innocent ignorance. The country is called L...

https://southernsecretshiking.wordpress.com/2013/04/13/by-horse-to-the-highest-point-in-the-eastern-cape-3
Notes on Basotho Culture. By Horse to the Highest Point in the Eastern Cape. At 3019m, seemingly imprisoned behind the towering cliffs of the Eastern Cape Drakensberg Escarpment, lies the retiring but enormous presence of the highest point in the Eastern Cape, and therefore the Cape, ‘Kwa Duma’ considered by an increasing number of South Africans as worthy of the title of ‘iNtaba Mandela’. And it wasn’t just the utywala and whisky talking either next morning horses duly arrived and were saddled. The ...

Notes on Basotho Culture. 2 Day Pony Trek from Sani Stone Lodge to Ha Machokoloanna and Return. On Friday 31 May 2013, after leaving our car at SA border control post, Christeen and I hiked the 8kms and 1000m of ascent up Sani Pass. We were met at Sani Top by Ntate Phoka, and from there he took us to his comfortable new ‘Sani Stone Lodge’ about 8kms along the Mokhotlong road. In the evening light, we were shown around and to the village, as much for the villagers to see us, as for us to meet them. Th...

Southern Secrets Hiking & Backpacking – Southern Secrets Hiking
https://southernsecretshiking.wordpress.com/author/southernsecretshiking
Notes on Basotho Culture. Author: Southern Secrets Hiking & Backpacking. A Shepherd’s Tale. Christeen wrote this up for our Facebook page but I think the story deserves a wider audience. During July, (mid-winter), he and another shepherd were surprised to see a lekhoa (white man) walking high up the valley towards their motibo (shepherds house). It was late afternoon and beginning to snow, so they asked the man where he was from and where he was going, as he only had a small bag on his back. The followin...
