The Kennet And Avon Canal. SOUTH DOWNS WAY 2. I woke at first light beneath a sombre sky. It was half past six and another day had begun. Propping my head on my pack, I gazed out into the distance, westward where the land folded and the river tumbled down through wooded hills to Bath. Then, heaving up my pack for the last time, I walked out through the bustle of the town to the railway station. I fell asleep in the train coming home.

SOUTH DOWNS WAY 2. From Mottisfont to Leckford the Test Way follows the old Sprat and Winkle. Line Further north it passes close to Ibthorpe House. Once owned by close friends of Jane Austen, who often stayed there (later it became the home of the painter Dora Carrington). It's a pleasant walk, and well worth the effort. No descriptions as such. SOUTH DOWNS WAY 2. There are many walking sites covering the north of England. This one is all about the south. Much of the south and south-east of the country is downland; so most of the walks are on chalk. The exception is the Two Moors Way, which crosses the sandstone and granite of Exmoor and Dartmoor. Some routes are popular national trails, such as the South Downs Way. Others I planned myself, linking various places together with bits of trails when they happened to run in the right direction.
