What's in a Name? - Southern Wild
http://southernwilddesign.com/whats-in-a-name
What’s in a Name? 22 July, 2015. I will admit to irreverence when it comes to some flowers. Roses come to mind. Not crazy about them. They are way too fussy for me, and they just don’t do anything for the pollinators that I love to have in my garden. Some bulbs come to mind as well. There is no doubt that they are beautiful…for about two whole weeks. Then what? Because we were stopping to look at irises. Beds and beds of irises. Ho hum. What did catch my eye was this…. Who gets to name these flowers?

Cutting Back Seedheads in the Spring. 13 March, 2016. By now you know that I am a believer in skipping the fall cleanup chore of cutting your perennials to the ground. This is a spring chore for me. Some folks may dislike the “messy” look of leaving the seedheads and twigs for the winter, but there are some pretty wonderful fellas out there that […]. Soil Blocking: Stepping Up to a Larger Block. 18 February, 2016. I praised soil blocking for seed starting in last week’s post. I am very pleased in the growing results and in its efficiency with materials and space. I have made over 3000 blocks in the last few weeks with a fraction of the soil mix and space that would be necessary with other methods. My […]. 30 June, 2015. Got some sunshine in your yard? Porch Update, July 23 | Hortitopia
https://marianstclair.wordpress.com/2015/07/23/porch-update-july-30
A region, a garden, a frame of mind…. Porch Update, July 23. Construction of the porch is continuing at a good pace although progress has slowed because of the nature of the work. Large parts of the job, including windows and wiring, are now in place and contractors are beginning to get to grips with details. Inside, the ceiling’s drywall is up and nearing completion. I can’t wait to show you the ceiling color I’ve chosen, but will save that surprise for later. Next week, work w...The room is dark becaus...

Thursday, July 3, 2014. 8220;Sucking is the first step to being sorta good at something.”. 8220;Sucking is the first step to being sorta good at something.”. My border in early July. I remember thinking early in my career that I would look forward to the day when everything wasn't an experiment. But the truth is everything is still an experiment. It always is. I practice, write, teach, and basically never stop thinking about planting design. Have I mastered my craft? But even with plantings we can contro...

Wildland Fire in the South
Firefighter and Public Safety. Only in current section. Wildland Fire in the South. Fire plays an essential role in the southern landscape. Managed carefully, wildland fire reduces risk to life and property and increases the health of fire-dependent habitats, like the longleaf pine ecosystem. As a nation, we must: "Safely and effectively extinguish fire, when needed; use fire where allowable; manage our natural resources; and as a nation, live with wildland fire.". Increasing Firefighter and Public Safety.
