I’ve been craving a really good bowl of gumbo. The ones that I made in the past all had wheat flour as the base for the roux. I decided to experiment this weekend and try making it gluten-free. I am so glad that I did. And so was my family who got to eat the results. Here’s what I have come up with. 1/2 cup butter (1 stick). 1/2 cup all purpose gluten-free flour mixture (I’ll share mine at the end of the post with a separate recipe). 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced. 2 ribs celery diced. Once your rou...

We have had visitors from Spain over the weekend. We have an exchange student who lives in Spain and her parents have come to visit and see where their daughter has spent her last year. 6 to 8 nice sized filets of fish (Ours were as long as my hand). 1 cup finely chopped pecan ( I buzz mine in the small bowl of my food processor). 1/4 cup gluten-free baking mix (I used Pamela’s, you could substitute All Purpose Flour here or any other flour you like). 2 tbsp olive oil. Serve with sliced lemons. Halve and...
Pre-Calculus the Teaching Textbooks Way | Southern Woman
https://southernwomanchrystal.wordpress.com/2010/08/31/pre-calculus-the-teaching-textbooks-way
Pre-Calculus the Teaching Textbooks Way. Anyway, I tell you that to tell you this. My oldest is studying Pre-Calculus this year. I knew that this was something that I really didn’t want a direct hand in daily so we searched for a learner-driven program. We tried a different program, but my daughter really struggled with the explanations and so we researched some more and decided on Teaching Textbooks. August 31, 2010. Homeschooling. Corn and Shrimp Chowder(Gluten-Free). I apologize in advance for the lack of photos, but I can’t find my SD card and this recipe was just too good not to share. I made this the other night and everyone in the house went back for seconds. When the six-year-old goes back for more you know it’s a hit. Corn and Shrimp chowder. 6 pieces of bacon, sliced into 1/4 inch slices. 2 lbs (about 8 medium potatoes) peeled and cut into 1 1/2 inch cubes. 1 bag of frozen sweet corn. 5 cups chicken stock. They are also la...
New Orleans Day 1 | Southern Woman
https://southernwomanchrystal.wordpress.com/2010/06/08/new-orleans-day
New Orleans Day 1. My family and I are currently visiting New Orleans for the very first time. I know, I know, I live in Alabama, how could I have never been to New Orleans before? Well, I have just never wanted to go alone and the opportunity to come has never really presented itself until now. Our friends from Spain wanted to visit The Big Easy while they were this close. So, here we are. I will post pictures soon. June 8, 2010. Home and Garden. Be the first to comment! Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

The Life and Times of a Southern Woman | Come sit a spell.
The Life and Times of a Southern Woman. Come sit a spell. Lazy heat, or, it’s hard work to look this lazy. Southern Women were made for heat. It’s not that we like to sweat (or don’t sweat – don’t believe that line of bullmyth), or that we like to fight with our hair to make it do something, anything. Our attitudes toward heat just formed a bit differently. Why have we historically drank things like mint juleps and various other forms of libation? Doesn’t that just heat us up? If you notice, it’s u...

Southern Woman's Guide to Purpose
Southern Woman's Guide to Purpose. This blog will hopefully stimulate conversation, and be a venue for encouragement and support for my friends, (old and new). My hope is that women who have had similar life experiences will share their lives and perhaps we can help each other embrace our past and present and find God's purpose and direction for our futures. Thursday, March 24, 2011. I really can't believe that I would ever think of myself as a weak person. I never thought of myself as weak! I will find ...

Southern To The Bone
Southern To The Bone. Wednesday, December 25, 2013. State of Alabama Wants to Ban using E-cigarettes Indoors. CASAA: Call to Action! Alabama E-Cigarette Usage Ban - HB258 (DEFEATED). My question is why? Below is a complete setup of one type. Most people I know do not use this one because the cigarettes do not last as long. You have the e cigarettes, the case, the charger, the liquid that one puts into the cartilage. One thing is sure. I am very tired of living in a world where the government wants to...
